Site Investigation

We Build Sustainable Future

Scope of Work
 Included drilling, soil sampling, site testing and
laboratory testing.

 4 boreholes were drilled to analyse the ground

condition beneath the site.

 Method:
• Standard Penetration Test (SPT)
• Collect of SPT samples, disturb samples and
unconsolidated drain (UD) samples.
• Laboratory testing work (physical soil test).
• Unconsolidated Undrained Triaxial Compression
Strength Test. Figure 1: Location of Boreholes

Soil Stratigraphy

Soil Layer Depth From (m) SPT ‘N’ Value Soil Description
1 0.0 – 5.0 Topsoil
Fine Sandy Loam
2 5.0 – 10.0 Highly Weathered
Poor to Medium Granite
3 10.0 – 15.0 Hard Layer

Proposed Foundation

We Build Sustainable Future

Type of Foundation
 Shallow Foundation
• Transfer the loads to the immediate soil
surface below the structure.
• Not transmitting the loads to great
depth.

 Bored Piles
• Take time to cast in place by casting
concrete into the borehole.
• Concrete is not placed under ideal
conditions and cannot be subsequently Figure 2: Installation of Bored Piles

inspected.

 Friction Piles
• Transfer the loads to the soil through the full
height of pile (Transfer the forces to soil).
• Depend to the degree of friction between pile’s
surface and the soil surround the piles.
• This does not depend on the depth of the hard
layer to rest on which suitable in unreachable
depth.

 End Bearing Piles

• Used in depth less than 40 m to be rested on
hard layer. Figure 3: Difference between End Bearing
• Direct transfer the load from soft layer to hard and Friction Piles.

layer (high bearing capacity).

• Even in weak soil will not fail by buckling.

Selected Foundation
 Pre-stressed Spun Concrete Pile
• Consist of wide ranging from 300 to 1200 mm diameter.
• Material consists of high strength concrete 50 to 75 MPa
and pre-stress steel.
• Suitable for any type of soil and environmentally friendly
installation by Jack in and Drop Hammer Method.
• Enough strength to support compression column loads.
• Able to manufactured to the lengths and diameter as Figure 4: Concrete Spun Pile

required client’s requirement.

We Build Sustainable Future

Criteria of Selected Spun Pile
 500 mm outer diameter of spun pile.
 Allowable Axial Load is 221 ton.
 Grade 80 concrete enables the piles to be driven through hard strata.
 Faster, easier and highly cost effective and require much less time.
 More durable concrete with high resistance to corrosion.
 Better bending resistance.
