Protecting Our Family Online

Introduction

• The family’s #1
problem/challenge nowadays
is the intrusive immorality
through internet pornography
Filipinos love their porn
• Pornography statistics shows the
Philippines in the 8 spot for the
largest revenues from pornography
in 2008 . The Philippines ranked
over Php50 billion in porn
revenues despite the fact that per
capita income was only $11.18, the
lowest of the top 10
Filipinos love their porn
• According to a statistics of adult website
Pornhub, Filipinos ranked 15th in the
world when it comes to watching porn
using mobile devices.
• The adult website said that Filipinos
would visit around nine pages in less
than 13 minutes, one of the longest
average durations that Pornhub tracked.

God’s calling for Christian Families
• 1TH 4:1 Finally, brothers, we
instructed you how to live in order
to please God, as in fact you are
living. Now we ask you and urge
you in the Lord Jesus to do this
more and more. 2 For you know
what instructions we gave you by
the authority of the Lord Jesus.
• 1TH 4:3 It is God's will that you
should be sanctified: that you
should avoid sexual immorality;
4 that each of you should learn
to control his own body in a way
that is holy and honorable, 5 not
in passionate lust like the
heathen, who do not know God
• It is God’s will that we live
in purity and protect
ourselves and our loved
ones from internet
pornography and from
anything that harms our
family.
I. The Demand for
Purity (v.3)

v3Kalooban ng Diyos na kayo'y

magpakabanal at lumayo sa
lahat ng uri ng kahalayan.
A. The Will of God Declared
• will… conveys the idea of desire,
even a heart’s desire,
• Will, not to be conceived as a
demand, but as an expression or
inclination of pleasure towards that
which is liked, that which pleases
and creates joy. (Zodhiates) G)
• Sanctified… literally means
sanctification and includes the ideas
of consecration, purification,
dedication and holiness.
• The dominant idea of sanctification
is 1) separation from the secular and
sinful and 2) setting apart for a
sacred purpose, for God’s special
use…
• Hagiasmos does not denote the
state of holiness but rather the
process of being made holy, of
becoming more and more in
character and conduct that which
God desires us to be.

• A major problem for the early

church was maintaining sexual
purity (e.g. 1Cor 5:1, 9, 10, 11).
• The sanctity of marriage was so
distorted that extramarital sex
was actually considered to be an
act of worship.
• We keep prostitutes for pleasure,
we keep mistresses for day to
day needs of the body, we keep
wives for the begetting of
children and for the faithful
guarding of the home.
(Demosthenes)
• JOHN 17.17 Sanctify them by the
truth; your word is truth. 18 As you
sent me into the world, I have sent
them into the world. 19 For them I
sanctify myself, that they too may
be truly sanctified.
• HEB 12:14 Make every effort to live
in peace with all men and to be
holy; without holiness no one will
see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one
misses the grace of God and that no
bitter root grows up to cause
trouble and defile many. 16 See that
no one is sexually immoral, or is
godless like Esau, who for a single
meal sold his inheritance rights as
the oldest son.
B. The Will of God Defined
• Avoid/Abstain (apechomai) -
conveys the idea of putting some
distance between;means to be away
or be at a distance
• Apechomai is apecho in the middle
voice… calls for the believer to hold
one's self from or keep one's self
away from contact or influence of
sexual immorality.
• The present tense is signifying
that saints must constantly keep
aloof from sexual immorality
which in turn calls for continued
exercise of self-control
• The phrase “sexual immorality” comes
from the Greek word porneia, which is
a very broad word encompassing
every kind of sexual activity outside
the circle of God’s will. It covers sins
of the mind, body, eyes, ears and lips.
It includes premarital sex, extra-
marital sex, every form of
homosexuality, adultery, and every
form of pornography.
• Paul doesn’t spell out every
detail of sexual immorality. He
doesn’t have to because the
particular expressions of sin will
change depending on time and
place and cultural factors.
A Detailed Looked on
Pornography
“Pornography is ‘material that is
sexually explicit and intended primarily
for the purpose of sexual arousal.’ It
may depict nudity or sexual behavior,
and includes written materials such as
romance novels, photographs, movies,
electronic images, video games,
internet chat rooms, erotic telephone
conversations, music, or other media.”
(“Safety Net – Resources to Protect Your Family from Pornography,” Healthy Sandy
Partnership,
www.healthysandy.org/fileadmin/downloads/healthy_sandy/Ecclesiastical_Packet.pdf)
“Porn: What Is It and Why Use It?”
(The Porn Phenomenon, Barna)
• 1. “Porn is notoriously difficult to
define. For Americans, it’s more a
question of function than form.”
• 2. “People use porn for the
obvious: arousal. But also for
boredom, curiosity, and fun.”
• 3. “One of the favorable realities uncovered
by the research is the degree of
transparency respondents display on the
topic
• 4. “Most Americans believe porn is ‘bad
for society,’ but those attitudes are
shifting toward neutrality or ‘good for
society’ among younger generations.”
• 5. Only small minority of adults who
use porn report much ‘guilt’ about
porn
• 6. “Teens and young adults have
‘encouraging’ or ‘accepting’
conversations toward porn.”
• 7. “Teens & young adults view ‘not
recycling’ as more immoral than
viewing porn.”
• 8. “Pornography has gone almost
completely digital.”
• 9. “Not only is porn more accessible
in the digital context, but
unsolicited porn has increased
substantially as well.”
• 10. “While porn has typically been
a man’s domain, its usage among
young women seems to have
become more common, perhaps
due to digital access.”
• 11. “Most teens are ‘sexting’—
either on the receiving or
sending end of sexually explicit
images.”
• The vast majority of the faith
community, including leaders
and laity, believe pornography is
a bigger problem in the Church
than it was two decades ago.
But many do not know what to
do about it.” (David Kinnaman, “The
Porn Phenomenon”, Barna)
• “Most pastors (57%) and youth
pastors (64%) admit they have
struggled with porn, either currently
or in the past.”
How Harmful is an Intrusive
Immorality?
• Some of the effects include:

• • Lasting negative or traumatic

emotional responses
• • Earlier onset of first sexual
involvement
• Increased risk for developing sexual
compulsion and addictive behavior
• • Increased risk of gaining an
incorrect and out-of-context view of
sex
• • The objectification of another
human being for selfish sexual
gratification50
• Up to 40% of sex addicts lose their jobs.
Fifty-eight percent suffer considerable
financial losses. Pornography increases
marital infidelity by 300%. A study of 10-
to 17-year-olds indicate the viewing of
pornography causes a feeling of
loneliness and depression. Another
serious consequence of young people
and pornography use is an increased
favorable attitude toward uncommitted
sexual exploration.
• The real danger is in the massive
amount of sexually perverted
material that is available, and
the reality, that for your child, it
is just 1 click away. The sheer
overexposure, no matter how
infrequent, tends to desensitize
a young person.
• The irony is that many
Christian adults tend to think
none of their kids are involved
sexually, while their own kids
think everyone else is “doing
it”. This irony is also
pervasive.
How youths are enticed
• a) “Approximately 75 percent of
pornographic websites display visual
teasers on their homepages before
asking if viewers are of legal age
• b) “Only 3 percent of pornographic
websites require proof of age before
granting access to sexually explicit
material
• c) “Two-thirds of pornographic websites
do not include adult content warnings.”
• “To make matters worse,
unsuspecting youth are commonly
tricked into opening pornographic
websites by attaching misspelled
words to pornographic pages or by
making it difficult to shut down or
get out of a site once opened, a
strategy referred to as “mouse
trapping.”
• In fact, Mitchell, Finkelhor, and
Wolak found that in 26 percent
of unwanted exposure
incidents, youth reported being
exposed to another sex site
while they were trying to exit
another.” (Mitchell, K. J., Finkelhor, D., & Wolak, J.
(2003).
But Can They Really Be
Reaching My Child?
• According to a survey of 19,000
parents, kids begin viewing porn as
early as age 6.” (ABC News10, May 15, 2013)
• A 2003 Focus on the Family poll revealed
that 47% of families said that
pornography is a problem in their home.
These were largely Christian families
responding to the poll.
• The Department of Justice warns
that “never before in the history
of telecommunications media in
the United States has so much
indecent (and obscene) material
been so easily accessible by so
many minors in so many
American homes with so few
restrictions.”
• Yet what happens when your
young people visit with their
friends, and they turn on their
cell phones?
• More than 1.5 billion
pornographic P2P (peer-to-peer)
downloads occur each month,49
and most are not detected by
“family filters.”
• Vice is a monster of so frightful
mien*,
As to be hated needs but to be seen;
Yet seen too oft, familiar with her
face,
We first endure, then pity, then
embrace.
(*Mien = air or bearing especially as
expressive of attitude or personality)
• (Alexander Pope)
• 1 Thess. 5.22 Avoid every kind of
evil.

• 2TI 2:22 Flee the evil desires of

youth, and pursue righteousness,
faith, love and peace, along with
those who call on the Lord out of a
pure heart.
• 1PE 2:11 Dear friends, I urge you,
as aliens and strangers in the
world, to abstain from sinful
desires, which war against your
soul.
II. The Demonstration of
Purity (vv.4-6a)

• A. Don’t Let Your Body

Controls You (v.4)
• 4 that each of you should learn
to control his own body in a way
that is holy and honorable,

• v4Dapat maging banal at

marangal ang pakikitungo ng
bawat isa sa kanyang asawa,a v
• A God-empowered man
controls his own body. When
God is not in control, the body
controls the man.
• We should model such control
before our children…

• We should teach our kids how

to control their own selves.
B. Don’t Act Like the
Unbelievers (v.5).

• 5 not in passionate lust like the

heathen, who do not know God;
• 5at hindi pagsunod lamang sa
nasa ng laman tulad ng inaasal
ng mga Hentil.
c. Don’t Take Advantage of
Others (v.6a)
• 6 and that in this matter no one
should wrong his brother or take
advantage of him.

• v6Sa bagay na ito, huwag ninyong

pagsamantalahan ang inyong
kapwa at huwag siyang dadayain
sa anumang paraan…
III. The Design of Purity
(vv.6b-8)

• A. Because of God’s
Punishment (v.6b)
• 6 …The Lord will punish men for all
such sins, as we have already told
you and warned you.

• 6…sapagkat mahigpit na
paparusahan ng Panginoon ang
gumagawa ng ganitong kasamaan,
tulad ng sinabi namin at
pinatotohanan sa inyo noon pa
man.
• HEB 13:4 Marriage should be
honored by all, and the
marriage bed kept pure, for
God will judge the adulterer
and all the sexually immoral.
• COL. 3.5 Put to death, therefore,
whatever belongs to your
earthly nature: sexual
immorality, impurity, lust, evil
desires and greed, which is
idolatry. 6 Because of these, the
wrath of God is coming. 7 You
used to walk in these ways, in
the life you once lived.
B. Because of God’s
Purpose (v.7)
• 7 For God did not call us to be
impure, but to live a holy life.

• 7Tayo'y tinawag ng Diyos upang

mamuhay sa kabanalan, hindi sa
kahalayan.
C. Because of God’s Pneuma
(v.8)
• 8 Therefore, he who rejects this
instruction does not reject man but God,
who gives you his Holy Spirit.
• v8Kaya, ang sinumang ayaw sumunod
sa katuruang ito ay hindi sa tao
sumusuway, kundi sa Diyos na siyang
nagkakaloob sa inyo ng kanyang
Espiritu Santo.
• To reject means to treat with
utter contempt. It is to render the
commandment of God null and
void.
CONCLUSION

•Let us protect our

family.
•Let us pursue purity.
