DETERMINATION OF

STATIC, VELOCITY AND

TOTAL PRESSURE
MEASUREMENT
USING
MANOMETER AND
PITOT TUBE
OBJECTIVES

 To learn how to get total

pressure measurement, static
pressure measurement, and
velocity pressure measurement
using manometer and pitot
tube.

 To understand why we use this

kind of instruments.

 To learn how manometer and

pitot tube works.
STATIC PRESSURE
(PRESSURE)

• It is the force exerted on

a fluid particle from all
directions, and is
typically measured with
gauges and transmitters
attached to the side of a
pipe or tank wall.

• Since static pressure is

what most pressure gauges
measure, static pressure is
usually what is implied
when the term "pressure" is
used in discussions.
VELOCITY PRESSURE
(DYNAMIC PRESSURE)

• The difference between the total

and static pressure is the dynamic
pressure, which represents the
kinetic energy of the flowing
fluid.

• Dynamic pressure
is a function of
the fluid
velocity and its
density.
TOTAL PRESSURE
(STAGNATION PRESSURE)

• Stagnation pressure is
simply equal to the sum of
the free-stream dynamic
pressure and free-stream
static pressure.

• Sometimes
referred to as
pitot pressure
because it is
measured using a
pitot tube.

as Pitot probe

Two Types of Pressure

1. Static Pressure
2. Total Impact

Vp - Velocity Approach
C - Dimensional Constant
PT - Total Pressure
P - Static Pressure
D - Density
• Pitot tubes are connected to
chambers and baffle plate for air to
be collected and transported to the
tube itself, the tube will give reading
of the pressure of air through the
manometer. The higher the pressure
the higher the reading will be.

• For example if the air or

water being tested has
high speeds the pressure
will be high shown by
the manometer

FOR MANOMETER DEVICE
• Manometer -An instrument for
measuring the pressure of gasses,
vapors and liquid.
• A manometer is one of the
earliest and simplest
devices used for
measurement of gauge
pressure or vacuum pressure
and differential pressures.

• A common simple manometer consists of

a
U shaped tube filled with some liquid.
Principles:
• A manometer works on the
principle of hydrostatic
equilibrium and is used for
measuring the pressure (static
pressure) exerted by a still
liquid or gas.
• In manometer unknown
pressure is determined by
balancing it against some
known pressure or vacuum.
We can measure comparatively
high pressures and negative
pressures.
