 Encompasses the lighting of all types of roads.
 Assisting traffic safety.
 Reduce night-time traffic collisions.
 It can allow pedestrians to see hazards, orientate
themselves, recognise other pedestrians and feel
more secure.
 It also has a wider social role, to reduce crime and the
fear of crime.
 Contribute to commercial and social use at night of
city centres and tourist locations by improving both
the daytime and night-time appearance.

 Luminance (CD/m2): Luminance describes the measurement of the amount of
light emitting, passing through or reflected from a particular surface from a solid
angle.
 Illuminance (LUX): Illuminance is a term that describes the measurement of the
amount of light falling onto (illuminating) and spreading over a given surface area.
 Glare: defined as difficulty seeing in the presence of bright light such as direct or
reflected sunlight or artificial light such as car headlamps at night.
 Overall Uniformity Ratio (U0): Ratio of minimum to average luminance
 Longitudinal Uniformity (Ul): ratio of minimum to maximum luminance
 Threshold Increment – TI (%): The measure of disability glare expressed as the
percentage increase in contrast required between an object and its background for
it to be seen equally well with a source of glare present.
 Surrounding Ratio (SR): Lighting the area either side of the road is important in
allowing drivers to see pedestrians and other road users who may be about to
cross the road. The lighting in a zone 5m either side of the road should be bright
enough so that pedestrians can be seen, but not so bright as to change the
adaptation state of the driver. The surround ratio (SR) is defined as the ratio of the
average illuminance on a 5m strip adjacent to the road compared with the average
illuminance on road.

 Average per kilometer cost of street lighting for typical residential
street is AED 0.28 – 0.3 Million including 10m high poles,
foundations, 60 W LED luminaire, cabling, trenches, Control
Cabinet etc.

Approximate cost breakdown of above would be:

 10m high pole including foundation : AED 9,000

 60W LED luminaire : AED 1,300
 Control Cabinet: AED 25,000
 It is wasted light that performs no function or task
◦ Such as sky glow
◦ Glare
 It is artificial light that goes where it’s not supposed to go
◦ Neighbor’s window
◦ Into the sky
