GALAXY

What can you see in this picture?
A galaxy is a huge collection
of gas, dust, and billions of
stars and their solar systems. A
galaxy is held together by
gravity.
Our galaxy, the Milky Way, also
has a supermassive black
hole in the middle.
There are many galaxies
besides ours, though. There
are so many, we can’t even
count them all yet!
Some galaxies are spiral-
shaped like ours. They have
curved arms that make it look
like a pinwheel.
Other galaxies are smooth and
oval shaped. They’re called
elliptical galaxies. And there are
also galaxies that aren’t spirals or
ovals. They have irregular shapes
and look like blobs. The light that
we see from each of these galaxies
comes from the stars inside it.
Milky Way is the large, disk-shaped
aggregation of stars that includes
the sun and its solar system. Milky
way is one of the example of Barred
Spiral Galaxy. It contains about 100-
400 billions of stars.
Andromeda is also known as M 31.
It is a large Spiral Galaxy in the
constellation Andromeda about 2.2
million light years from earth. It is
the largest galactic neighbor to the
Milky Way Galaxy. It contains about
1 trillions of stars.

Andromeda is also known as M 31.
It is a large Spiral Galaxy in the
constellation Andromeda about 2.2
million light years from earth. It is
the largest galaxy of the
Local Group, which also contains
the Milky Way, the Triangulum
Galaxy, and other smaller galaxies.
Andromeda is expected to collide
with the Milky Way around 4 billion
years from now. The two will
eventually merge into a single new
galaxy called Milkomeda
The Triangulum Galaxy is a
spiral galaxy approximately 3 million
light-years (ly) from Earth in the
constellation Triangulum. It is
catalogued as Messier 33 or NGC
 598, and is sometimes informally
referred to as the Pinwheel Galaxy, a
nickname it shares with Messier 101.
The Triangulum Galaxy is the third-
largest member of the Local Group of
galaxies, behind the Milky Way and
the Andromeda Galaxy. It is one of the
most distant permanent objects that
can be viewed with the naked eye.
The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is a
satellite galaxy of the Milky Way.At a
distance of 50 kiloparsecs (≈163,000
light-years),[ the LMC is the third-closest
galaxy to the Milky Way. The LMC has a
diameter of about 14,000 light-years
(4.3 kpc). The LMC is the fourth-largest
galaxy in the Local Group, after the
Andromeda Galaxy (M31), the Milky Way,
and the Triangulum Galaxy (M33).

What are they?
