GERUND

IS A VERBAL THAT
FUNCTIONS AS A NOUN.
• THE FUNCTION OF GERUND :
1. Gerund as subject.
2. Gerund as object :
a) object of verb.
b) object of preposition.
3. Gerund as Predicate Complements.
4. Gerund as Modifiers of Nouns.
5. Gerund as short prohibitions.
6. Gerund is used after certain phrase.
7. Gerund is used after cetain verbs and the meaning is
passive.
8. Gerund is used in proverb.
9. Gerund is used after possessive adjectives and
pronouns.

examples :
1. Swimming is a healthy sport.
2. Being hungry is never fun.
3. Singing makes her happy.
4. Cleaning the house is a hard work.
5. Painting is an interesting hobby.
• Gerund as object:
a) Gerund as object of verb.
Gerund is used after certain verb, such as :
Admit anticipate appreciate avoid
Consider delay detest enjoy
Escape excuse finish forgive
Imagine involve mention mind
Miss postpone prevent risk
Save suggest understand begin
Continue deny dislike forget

It means Gerund is used after preposition.
Example :
1. Iam thinking about going home.
2. He is good at telling lies.
3. She is fond of climbing.
4. After swimming the children felt cold.
5. They left without eating.
• 3. Gerund as Predicate Complement.
• Example :
• a). His favourite sport was riding.
• b). His favourite hobby is collecting
stamps.

• 1. The reading books are on the table.
• The reading books mean the books
• which are used for reading.

larangan singkat ).

• 6. Gerund is used after certain phrase,
such as :
• Can’t stand
• Can’t stop
• Can’t help
• Can’t bear
• = tak tahan, tak sampai hati.
• Examples :
• 1. I can’t help laughing.
• 2. It’s no use ( good ) arguing.
• 3. There is something worth buying.

• 7. Gerund is used after certain verbs and the meanings


are passive, SUCH AS :
• It needs
• It requires
• It wants
= perlu di…..
• Examples :
• 1. The wall wants whitewashing= The wall wants to be
whitewashed.
• 2. This knife needs sharpening = This knife needs to be
sharpened.
• 3. The grass requires cutting off = The grass requires to
be cut off.

• A). Seeing is believing = Tidak percaya sebelum melihat.
• B). Saving is having = Hemat pangkal kaya.
• 9. Gerund is used after possessive
adjectives and pronouns.
• Examples :
• a). She doesn’t mind my ( me ) coming
late.
• b). It’s no use their ( them ) complaining.
• c).He left the house without our ( us )
knowing anything about it.
