Nuclear energy and Environment Protection

„Nuclear energy is the only no greenhouse gas-emitting power

source that can effectively replace fossil fuels and satisfy global
demand“
Patrick Moore, founder of Greenpeace, The Miami Herald, January 30, 2005

"It's like a slow-motion train crash. If we don't do anything about

this next year, and the next, nothing will happen. But we will find
soon that our electricity supply becomes even more fragile and
we get power cuts and it will get worse.”
Prof. Ian Fells, Chairman New and Renewable Energy Centre,
BBC News Website, 16. Mai 2005

Decision Taken for the First EPR in France
Nuclear Power covers 78% of electricity;
France features the lowest CO2 emission of all OECD countries
A new energy law is in the voting process of the parliament
with the aim to give priority to nuclear power in national
energy strategy
Start in next decade with modernization of the
existing power plant pool
NPPs of EPR type are planned to replace older plants
The first EPR will be erected on site of Flamanville from 2007 on

Positioning the EPR on the US market

 AREVA’s goal is to deploy EPR plants in the USA and therefore to

licence the EPR design

Design Certification Application: end 2007

► AREVA and Constellation have formed UniStar Nuclear - a unique

business model - to market the U.S. EPR in the USA

 Several US utilities have expressed strong interest and consider

EPR as a viable option for future needs.

► The U.S.EPR will be 100% American:

 Re-engineered to conform US codes and standards
 80% of supply to originate from the USA
 Long-term industrial partnership contemplated
 UniStar recently stepped into component manufacturing in USA

Three Tasks for Nuclear Energy,
Today and Tomorrow

Cover part of power demand growth

in industrialized and emerging countries
Substitution of aging base-load power plants
in industrialized countries, starting about 2010
Deployment of nuclear energy in new fields
other than electricity generation,
based on new reactor types („Generation IV“)

We are ready
to bear these
challenges!

Why additional Nuclear Power?

New nuclear power plant

covers partly the additional electricity demand and replaces
old power plants

enables, together with renewable, the fulfillment of the
