Modern forensics

It mostly deals with “Crime Scene

Investigation” using cutting edge
scientific technologies to identify a
substance and connect evidence to a
particular person and place.
Branches Of Forensics
 Crime scene investigation
 Forensic entomology
 Facial reconstruction
 Forensic osteology
 Cryptography
 Questioned document analysis
 Forensic pathology
Crime Scene Investigation (CSI)
 Practitioners of CSI
gather all evidence
relevant to a crime that
has taken place.

 Extreme attention to
detail is necessary.

 The ability to recognize

patterns that others
may not notice makes
for a good crime scene
investigator.
Forensic Entomology
 The study of the life
cycles of various
insects in order to
understand the timing
of criminal activities
such as homicide.
 Practitioners have a
great deal of
familiarity with insect
taxonomy and
ontogeny.
Facial Reconstruction

 Using their in-depth

understanding of
human anatomy and
osteology, scientists
reconstruct the faces
of homicide victims
based on the
morphology of skulls
found at crime
scenes.

Famous Fictionist investigators
Fictionist investigators have
captivated our imagination by
their seemingly uncanny knack
of looking for the right stuff at the
right time resulting in an
exceptionally thrilling conclusion.

THE CSI effect
This show (CSI) has created such an
impact that expectation of forensic
science solving the crime is so
unrealistically high resulting in a
“Dramatic License “
This phenomenon is now referred to
as the CSI effect
Lets have a look at a
couple of unsolved
case studies from
real life incidents
Case Study 1
Jack The ripper
 Jack the ripper is probably the most
controversial and consequential serial
killer ever.
 His identity is unknown after being
mentioned for the first time in 1888 in
England
 His is still a subject of intrigue and
mystery to every forensic investigator.
Jack The Ripper
Itis estimated that he was responsible for
the deaths of over 70 women mostly by
dissection.
Some of the organs of the victims were
missing suggesting that he was a skilled
surgeon.
This created a dreadful fear for surgeons
and doctors in general in England.

Case Study 2
The Love Bug
 This is the first and most
destructive computer virus
created .
 It was created by a Computer
science student by the name
Guzman in Philippines.
The Love Bug
 The virus was in the form of an e-mail with the
subject ILOVEU
 Who wouldn’t want to open an e-mail with the
subject I LOVE U!!
 On clicking, the virus entered the address book
of the victim and spread to all of his contacts
thus resulting in a chain reaction.
 In May 2000,there was no law no cyber law and
hence Guzman couldn’t be convicted of any
crime.
