Earth:

A habitable
planet
THE EARTH IS 4.53 BILLION YEARS
OLD.
WHEN THE PLANET WAS ABOUT 3
MILLION YEARS OLD, THE EARLIEST
LIFE-FORMS STARTED TO APPEAR.
 The Earth is the only planet known to support life.
 Earth is much smaller than the gas giants found in
the outer solar system.
 Earth is a terrestrial planet with liquid water
covering roughly 70 percent of its solid surface.
 The third planet from the Sun
 It has an atmosphere that contains both free
oxygen and liquid water, two key elements
needed to support life
Factors that make a planet
habitable:
It has to be a comfortable distance
away from a star (Habitable Zone)
It should not have a very low mass.
It must rotate on its axis and revolve.
It should have a molten core.
It should hold an atmosphere
What makes the
Earth habitable?
EARTH
 It has the right distance from the Sun,
 it is protected from harmful solar
radiation by its magnetic field,
 it is kept warm by an insulating
atmosphere
 and it has the right chemical ingredients
for life, including water and carbon
Earth System

consists of interrelated
parts or components that
enable it to support life
4 Subsystems
-Hydrosphere - Biosphere
-Lithosphere - Atmosphere
How are the different
subsystems
interconnected with
one another?
ATMOSPHERE
 IS A THIN LAYER OF GASES THAT SURROUNDS THE
EARTH.
 IT COMPOSED OF 78% NITROGEN, 21% OXYGEN,
0.9% ARGON, 0.03% CARBON DIOXIDE AND TRACE
AMOUNTS OF OTHER GASES
 THIS THIN GASEOUS LAYER INSULATES THE EARTH
FROM EXTREME TEMPERATURE
 IT BLOCKS THE EARTH FROM MUCH OF THE SUN’S
INCOMING ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION
The atmosphere is divided into five layers
1) The troposphere is the first layer above the surface and
contains half of the Earth's atmosphere. Weather occurs in
this layer.
2) Many jet aircrafts fly in the stratosphere because it is
very stable. Also, the ozone layer absorbs harmful rays
from the Sun.
3) Meteors or rock fragments burn up in the mesosphere.
4) The thermosphere it is where the space shuttle orbits.
5) The atmosphere merges into space in the extremely thin
exosphere. This is the upper limit of our atmosphere
BIOSPHERE

ISMADE UP OF THE PARTS OF

EARTH WHERE LIFE EXISTS
LITHOSPHERE

THESOLID PART OF THE

EARTH
HYDROSPHERE
COMPRISES THE EARTH’S
LIQUID WATER
IT COVERS ABOUT 70% OF
THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH
Agreement:
1. Draw a carbon cycle
showing interrelationships
among the four subsystems
of the Earth.
2. Explain the cycle in five to
ten sentences.
