SIMPLE PAST TENSE

Sometimes called the preterite, is used to talk about a completed action in a


time before now. The simple past is the basic form of past tense in English.
The time of the action can be in the recent past or the distant past and action
duration is not important.
The formula of simple past tense
Verbal
(+) S + V2 + O + C
(-) S + did + not + V1 + O + C
(?) Did + S + V1 + O + C ?
(?) WH + did + S + V1 + O + C ?

You always use the simple past when you say when something happened, so it is
associated with certain past time expressions

I walked home at lunchtime.


I brought my lunch to school.
a definite point in time: last week, when I was a child, yesterday, six weeks ago
We saw a good film last week.
Yesterday, I arrived in Geneva.
She finished her work atseven o'clock
I went to the theatre last night
an indefinite point in time: the other day, ages ago, a long time ago People lived in
caves a long time ago.
She played the piano when she was a child.
Note: the word ago is a useful way of expressing the distance into the past. It is
placed after the period of time: a week ago, three years ago, a minute ago.

Why do we use Simple Past Tense?

Completed actions in the past.

- My mom made some pancake for us yesterday.

A series of completed actions in the past.

- I finished my work, walked to the beach, and


found a nice place to swim.
PAST PROGRESSIVE TENSE

Indicates continuing action, something that was happening, going on, at some
point in the past. Both action occurred at the same time, but one action began
earlier and was in progress when the other action occurred. We use clause
connector : when and while. This tense is formed with the helping "to be"
verb, in the past tense, plus the present participle of the verb (with an -
ing ending):
The Formula of Past Progressive :
(+) S + was/were + present participle ( v-ing) + o + c
(-) S + was/were + not + present participle (v-ing) + o + c
(?) was/were + s + present participle (v-ing) + o + c
(?) Wh + was/were + s + present participle (v-ing) + o + c
Examples :

He was playing football when I came yesterday.


He was not playing football when I came yesterday.
Was he playing football when I came yesterday? Yes I was, no I wasn’t
What was he playing when I came yesterday?

While he was playing football, I came yesterday.


While he was not playing football, I came yesterday.

Exceptions
Exceptions when adding 'ed' : Exceptions when adding 'ing' :
 when the final letter is e, only add d.  silent e is dropped (but: does not apply for -
Example: love - loved ee)
Example: come - coming
 after a short, stressed vowel, the final but: agree - agreeing
consonant is doubled
Example: admit - admitted  after a short, stressed vowel, the final
consonant is doubled
 final l is always doubled in British Example: sit - sitting
English (not in American English)
Example: travel - travelled  final l is always doubled in British English
(not in American English)
 after a consonant, final y becomes i. (but: Example: travel - travelling
not after a vowel)
Example: worry - he worried  final ie becomes y.
