APH-

1) Fuel saving- 4% for a 110 c rise in air temp. 11% for a 280
C rise in air temp.
2) Type- recuperative & regenerative.
3) Principle of operation- counter flow heat exchanger.
4) Regenerative APH- storage type heat exchanger, have an
energy storage medium, called the matrix.
5) Rotary APH- Ljungstrom APH.
6) Diaphragm- steel sheet corrugated-heat transfer surface.
7) Sector plate divides the gas-air path.
8) These are compact heat exchangers with a large heat
transfer surface being accommodated in a small volume.

(9) Drawbacks of rotary APH are-
9(i)) Flow openings being plugged by fly ash.
9(ii)) Sealing of gas to air path and vice-versa.
9(iii)) Large pressure drops for both gas and air.

APH rotor drive unit-
1) The driving force for turning the rotor is applied at its
periphery.
2) A pin rack mounted on the rotor shell is engaged by a
pinion attached to the low speed shaft of a power
driven speed reducer.
3) Air motor is an auxiliary drive for the air preheater.
4) This drive insures the continued operation of the APH,
even if power to the electric motor is interrupted.
5) Caution- air motor should never be operated without
the lubricator.

9/17/2018 4
APH Working principle-
1) The Ljungstrom APH absorbs waste heat from flue
gas, then transfers this heat to incoming cold air by
means of continuously rotating heat transfer
elements of specially formed metal plates. Thousands
of these high efficiency elements are spaced and
compactly arranged within twelve sector- shaped
compartments of a radially divided cylindrical shell,
called the rotor.
2) The housing surrounding the rotor is provided with
duct connections at both ends, and is adequately
sealed by radial and circumferential sealing members-
forming an air passage through one half of the
preheater, and a gas passage through the other.
9/17/2018 5
APH Working principle-
3) As the rotor slowly revolves the mass of
elements alternately through the gas and air
passages, heat is absorbed by the element
surfaces passing through the hot gas stream,
then, as these same surfaces are carried
through the air stream, they release the
stored up heat-thus greatly increasing the
temp of the incoming combustion or process
air.

Heating element
1) The heating element is a compact arrangement
of formed metal sheets contained in the rotor in
two or more layers.
2) The basketed element in the cold end can be
removed without disturbing sealing members.
3) When one edge of the cold end element has
thinned to approximately one third its original
thickness, the baskets can be reversed for
extended element life.

APH Bearings
1) The complete rotor is supported by a thrust bearing.
2) The load is transmitted to the thrust bearing by a
trunnion, bolted to the lower end of the rotor post.
3) The bearing assembly is mounted on a support beam.
4) To guide the upper end of the rotor, a guide trunnion
is bolted to the face of the rotor post.
5) The position of this trunnion is maintained by a radial
guide bearing assembly mounted on a guide beam.

APH SEALS-
1) Seals are provided at both ends of the APH to minimize
leakage between the air side and the gas side of the APH.
2) The radial seals are attached to each diaphragm of the
rotor and are set at a specified clearance from the sector
plates, which separate the air and gas streams.
3) The circumferential seals are clamped to the periphery of
the rotor and are adjusted to the necessary clearance
from the circumferential sealing surface on the connecting
plate.
4) The seals provided at the rotor post operate with
minimum clearance against the extended lip of the
bearing cover.
