The Persian

Empire

Educational System
-Boys were not allowed to see their fathers
until they were five. They stayed with the
women.

-From age five to twenty, the boys were

trained in horsemanship, archery,
swordsmanship, honesty, and other ethical
principles.

-The focus of Persian education was to

produce efficient soldiers and provide ethical
guidance.

-The women did not get an education like the

men did. They learned from their mothers
how to do house work.
Government System

-The empire was divided into twenty provinces, which each had their own governor, or
satrap.

-Soldiers were used to enforce laws upon the citizens of the different provinces.

-These governors reported to the king of Persia about their provinces.

Technology
-The first battery was created in Persia around two
thousand years ago. It was made out of clay, a
copper cylinder, and an oxidized iron rod.

-Ancient Persians were the first to use chemical

warfare against their enemies. They mined sulfur
crystals, which emitted a poisonous gas.

-Persians were the inventors of the windmill. The

windmills were used to draw water from the streams
for the people.

-Qanats, which are basically underground pipes that

carry water, were used to connect wells to give
everyone access to water.
Infrastructure
-The Persian Empire was one of the largest empires of its time, so it required an extensive
road system.

-The Royal Road was one of the longest and most well-kept roads, and it was basically a
primitive highway for Persia.
Society
-Trading created a wealthy upper class, and further separated
the upper and lower classes.

-Women really had no power, and men were in charge of

everything.

-Slavery, sadly, was common in the Persian Empire.

-Because of their advanced social structure, tax collectors,

administrators, translators, and recording clerks.

-The people would go to pray at local temples, but of course,

slaves were not allowed in the temples.
Medicine
-The Persians used over thirty documented
herbs for many different medical purposes.

-Some ancient texts show that certain plants

were assigned as cures for specific diseases.

-They had three types of medicine. There

was spiritual medicine, herbal medicine, and
surgery. Spiritual medicine was used to
cleanse you of your sins.

-Physicians in war had to help all patients,

enemy or otherwise.
Why did this Empire End?
-At around 480 B.C., Darius the Great was dead, but his son took his place.

-The Persians tried to fight Greece because why not, and they got crushed.

-The Greek had better battle tactics than the Persians.

-The Persian Wars were basically the end of the Persian Empire, and then, the Greek took
over.
