Alexander Graham Bell

Invention of the Telephone


• Born: March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh,
Scotland.

• He had two brothers

Second son of Alexander Melville Bell


and Elisa Grace Symonds
• His grandfather and father were experts on the
mechanics of voice and elocution.

• Alexander’s mother, who was nearly deaf, became an


accomplished pianist and also a portrait painter and
she inspired him to undertake big challenges.
In 1867, Bell and his family moved to London
so that he and his remaining brother could
study at better schools.

“Turning point of his life.”


In 1870 his parents, in search of a healthier
climate, convinced him to move with them
to Brantford, Ontario, Canada.

• When he was 25, Bell opened his School


of Vocal Physiology and Mechanics of
Speech in Boston, where he taught deaf
people to speak.

Alexander
Graham Bell died
at his home in
Beinn Bhreagh,
Nova Scotia
.
AWARDS
• In 1880, Bell received the Volta Prize with
a purse of 50,000 francs for the invention
of the telephone.
• He received the Légion d'honneur (Legion
of Honor) from the French government in
1881.
• In 1902, The Society of Arts of London,
England, awarded him the Albert Medal for
his invention.
