Abstract
This proposal proposes the effect of Facebook on
Human Sciences students’ academic
performance. This research done thoroughly to
answer most of major research question and
problem in accordance to the reason most of
Human Sciences students nowadays have
Facebook account and become addicted to it.

This study is tries to answer these major questions:
1. What are the negative effects of Facebook on
student’s academic achievement?
2. How much time those students spend on?
3. Why majority of Human Sciences’ student are
using Facebook?
4. What is the relationship between Facebook and
their academic achievement?

As the other research, we need to have a specific
sample and which in this study our sample are
International Islamic University Malaysia student
whom taking Human Sciences and have
Facebook.

(Hypothesis)*
Our major hypothesis is the more students spent
time on Facebook, the higher percentage do fail in
examination. We try to find the connection
between time spent on Facebook and their CGPA
or result.
We expect that there is a connection between times
spent on social network i.e. Facebook and lower
grade of Human Sciences student. To cope up with
that problem, we will provide certain way to
overcome this problem.

As the other research, we need to have a specific
sample and which in this study our sample are
International Islamic University Malaysia student
whom taking Human Sciences and have
Facebook.
Our method of doing this research is using
questionnaires, survey, and interview as well. It is
because we believe that through this way, we can
get approximate result. By that, our research is
reliable for the future use.

Relevant of the Project
This project or research is relevant because nowadays
most of people in the world have Facebook. The latest
information of active users of Facebook was 500
million people and half of them are active users and
most of them are young people. By that, we assume,
most of our sample i.e. Human Sciences’ Student are
Facebook users.

The addiction to Facebook is also a rising issue. By that
issue, we tried to find the connection between the
Facebook and Human Sciences Student academic
performance. This study has been done in the past. For
instance, the book by Neil Selwyn with the title “Screw
Blackboard...do it on Facebook!’: An investigation of,
students’ educational use of Facebook”. The book is
saying that using Facebook as a medium of study
instead of using Blackboard. So, the time consumption
is less because we need only an internet connection to
study (Selwyn, 2007).
NEXT
We expect that by finishing this research, we can
implement new and better way of using Facebook. It is
because social network has many positive effects if
student use it positively.

Sampling

Non-probability sampling because it is difficult to find a similar

case among Human sciences student who used Facebook.

 We will use snowball and purposive non-probability sampling.

In snowball sampling, we begin with one case and then based on
information about interrelationships from that case , identified
it, and repeats the process again and again.

In purposive sampling, we judges who best represent the

population and select the sample accordingly.

Methodology
Interview
We going to do are face-to-face interview and survey. In
this way we approach to administering a questionnaire
by face-to-face, whereby the researchers read out the
questions and record the answer. We use this kind of
instrument because one definite advantage is the high
response rate.

Survey
Furthermore, survey is one of effective way to collect
data. We can distribute it to many people and get
many different answers from them. Different people
have different perspective, so in order to make things
clear we will use both of these instruments.

DATA COLLECTION
After we receive the answer from our respondents
through questionnaire, we will compile it in one place.
By that, data interpretation will be more easily done
because all the data is in one place. We will put it in
categories because our focus in this study is to prove
that Facebook is affecting Human Sciences Students’
performance. By putting the answer in different
category, when we want to interpret them, it will be an
easy job.
