Japan’s Invasion of

Manchuria
Made by Arun Basavaraja and
Siddharth Sharma 9c
Why did Japan invade Manchuria

• In September 1931, they claimed that Chinese

soldiers had sabotaged the railway, and attacked the Chinese
army (which had just executed a Japanese spy). The Chinese
army did not fight back because it knew that the Japanese were
just wanting an excuse to invade Manchuria
• Japan wanted the vast amount of new resources Manchuria had
• Japan needed a bigger land space
• China was weakened by foreign influence. Manchuria is rich in
natural resources, which Japan desperately needed for its rapid
industrial development. Among many other reasons, Japan saw
this as a chance to seize power in the region.
Why did Japan invade Manchuria

• The Wall Street Crash. It crippled the USA's economy andtherefore

they starting importing less. Japan also struggledwithout enough
trade from the USA. Eg; One of Japan's key exportswas silk and
America decided to stop importing it, making itthemselves
instead. 2. To try and gain more natural resources and raw
materials tosupport their massive expansion and militarization
How did Japan invade Manchuria?

• The Japanese invasion of Manchuria began on 18 September 1931,

when the Kwantung Army of the Empire
of Japan invaded Manchuria immediately following the Mukden
Incident.
• On the right you can see what the map of
the far east looked like during this time
period.
What was the leagues response

• A Special Assembly of the league as held in February 1933 (17

months after the invasion). 40 nations voted that was to blame
for the war andshould withdraw. ... Instead of pulling out of
Manchuria , Japan walked out of the League. In 1933, Japan
invaded Jehol the Chinese province next to Manchuria
• The Chinese government protested to the LON, but several of the
LON’s weakneses came together and meant that they could
not stop the Japanese invasion: The League was too slow. The LON
had no power to force countries to obey.
Fun facts :D

• Japan renamed Manchuria Manchukuo after they invaded

• Japan had invaded Manchuria without declarations of
war, breaching the rules of the League of Nations.
• Japan was becoming increasingly crowded due to its limited size
as a nation and its rapidly increasing population.
