¿Qué es la Mortalidad Infantil?

 La Mortalidad Infantil (MI) expresa la muerte de los niños

menores de un año de vida (0 a 364 días).
 Para relacionarla con la cantidad de niños nacidos en un
período y en un lugar geográfico determinado, se utiliza la
Tasa de Mortalidad Infantil (TMI) que se calcula de la
siguiente manera

 De cada 1 000 niñas y niños que nacieron en Perú
durante los 0 a 4 años anteriores a la encuesta (fecha
central: julio 2014), 15 murieron durante el primer año en
comparación con 16 para el período 5 a 9 años
anteriores (fecha central: julio 2009) y 18 para el período
10 a 14 años anteriores (fecha central: julio 2004).
 En el Perú en los últimos veinte años la mortalidad infantil
y la mortalidad neonatal han descendido
significativamente , pero continúan siendo
inaceptablemente altas. No obstante, se estima que 5,9
millones de niños menores de 5 años murieron en 2015,
en su mayoría por causas prevenibles.
 Dentro de la mortalidad infantil se tiene el componente
de la mortalidad neonatal, que son las muertes de los
menores de un mes de vida (estrictamente de menores
de 28 días), debido a causas exógenas (asfixia, sepsis,
neumonía, enfermedades diarreicas, tétanos, entre otras)
y causas endógenas (nacimientos prematuros, anomalías
congénitas, etc.) propias del recién nacido y las que
contrae de forma hereditaria, las cuales son difíciles de
controlar por las propias condiciones genéticas de los
recién nacidos
