• The word “chemical” does not have a specific scientific meaning


• Everything in the world that isn’t energy is a chemical or contains
chemicals
• Can be used interchangeably with “matter”
• Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space
CHEMICALS IN DAILY LIFE

• The Hazardous Household Products Symbols


(HHPS) give safety information about products
• Each symbol provides two warnings:
• Whether the hazard is the container or the contents
• Type of hazard- explosive, corrosive, flammable, or
poisonous
HANDLING CHEMICALS & EQUIPMENT

• By law, everyone in the workplace and school must be informed


about the chemicals they use and how to handle them safely
• Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
provides information about how to store, handle, and dispose of
chemicals
WHMIS

• There are 9 symbols for hazardous products, they are new since
2015!
• Each chemical comes with a Safety Data Sheet (SDS), it contains
information about the composition and properties of hazardous
substances as well as how to store and handle it safely
