Workshop Session 06

Topics: Disruptive Technologies, Moore’s Law,

RFID vs Barcode, Friedman’s Flat World
Test 01
 Tests can be collected from MSC
 Review your grade
 Errors with grades will be corrected
 Tests that require re-marking:
 Attach a note to the front page stating why you think your test
needs to be regraded
 You have 2 weeks to apply for a regrade
 The entire test paper will be regraded, not just a single question
 There is a risk some students will receive less marks after the
paper has been regraded

Nov-18 MSYS111
Review of Session 1
 Disruptive Technologies
 What is a disruptor
 Examples of disruptors
 Moore’s Law
 Consequences of Moore’s Law
 The cost of data communication and data storage is essentially zero.
 What are the implications of this?
 RFID vs Barcode
 What are the differences?
Review of Session 13
 What is meant by the term “Disruptive Technology”
Digital Disruption: Definition and meaning
For technology to be a digital disruption, it has to meet the following
qualities:
 It has to be disruptive – a threat to an incumbent’s business goals
in short or long term
 It has to be digital. For example, a new technology such as artificial
intelligence, or augmented reality.
 Challenges traditional business models, and has enormous
consequences for traditional business within an industry
Disruptive Innovators:

How has Netflix disrupted the media industry?

Moore’s Law
 Explain Moore’s Law and some of its consequences.
 “The number of transistors per inch on an integrated chip doubles
every 18 months” (Moore, 1965).

 computers become cheaper, smaller and faster.

MSYS111
Review of Session 13
 What are some of issues we face when trying to forecast the future,
particularly with respect to technological developments?

 changing techology:
 1.
2.robatic assistance
3.dronce
4.3D printed food
5.smartwatches
6.treadmils for dog
7.jetpacks
Compare and Contrast

 Compare and contrast RFID Tags and Bar Codes.

Give examples in your answer.
How would you go about answering this question?

 COMPARE and CONTRAST: How are

they the same AND how are they
different?
 Give EXAMPLES
BARCODE vs RFID
Barcodes: RFID:
► Scans by line of sight ► Scans wirelessly
► Stores little info (price) ► Can store lots of info
► Has to be scanned individually ► Many items can be scanned at once
► Saves handling time
► Good for bulk products
Review of Session 1
 Imagine PAK‘n’SAVE were to implement RFID tags. Would it work?
What concerns would you have? What are the likely costs and
benefits?
 Costs and Benefits: Think beyond financial costs. What are the human costs,
or societal costs?
 What are some potential benefits to the business?
 What are some potential benefits to customers?
 What are some potential benefits to employees?
The World is Flat
 Title is a metaphor for viewing the world as
a global, level playing field in relation to
commerce.
 Key Concepts in Friedman’s Flat World:
 Globalisation
 Flatteners
 Convergence
FRIEDMAN’S FLAT WORLD -- Globalisation
 How does globalisation 3.0 differ from globalisation 1.0 and 2.0?

 
FRIEDMAN’S FLAT WORLD: The flatteners
1. The Personal Computer (PC) and release of Windows
operating system (1989)
2. Netscape – Browser, made the internet accessible (1995)
3. Workflow software – Interoperability of software
applications, and standardised computer languages and
protocols such as smtp and html

4. Uploading – Collaborating: Blogs, Wikis, sharing online

FRIEDMAN’S FLAT WORLD: Implications
What is the impact of these four flatteners?

 GREATER COLLABORATION
- Connect and collaborate in for more ways than ever before
- Internet driven
- Change in power, with the individual having more power
- Cost of collaboration has come down
