PRELIMINARY WORK: OPTIMIZING THE PERFORMANCE OF ROTARY

DISC FILTER (CAKE MOISTURE AND PRODUCTIVITY)

Rotary Disc Filter
• One of solid liquid separation device
• Have a rotary motion with the adjustable
rotary speed.
• Use vacuum pressure to form the filter cake
on the surface of filter cloth and reducing
moisture content of cake
• Use compressor pressure for snap-blow
sequence that use to release the cake
• Moisture Target of product is 13.5 % before
dewater in rotary dryer
• Have important role to the productivity and
influence the moisture of rotary dryer
product.
Purpose Of Work
1. Understand the effect of rotary disc filter variables to the
performance of rotary disc filter (Cake Moisture and
Productivity)
2. Determine the most affecting factor to the performance of
rotary disc filter

Constraint of Work 1. The sampling is focussed on 7-FT-205 at Disc 2 and 7 (Count

from DE)
2. Vacuum presssure data was obtained from PI-Data Link
3. Particle size distribution was still ignored due to the screen
device was unready to use at that time
4. The Drimax consumption (dosage) did not record at specific
dosage yet. But only recorded using drymax and no drymax
used
5. Cake release assumed to 100 %
Methodology
1. Setting the VDC to the current
speed ( 25 Hz, 35 Hz, 45 Hz or 55
Hz) and convert it to RPM

2.
Taking the slurry from the filter
inlet pipe to know the solid density

3.
Using a cylinder sampler device, take
the filter cake sample from the filter
disc at the snap blow sequence.
Methodology
4. Step 2 and 3 are repeated 3
times with a same filter speed
and for slurry sample is mixed in
a plastic.
5.
Measure the thickness of
filter cake using a Vernier
and repeat it for 3 times

6. Measure the weight of each

filter cake and dry it in the
oven. Then, record the
weight of dry filter cake to
know the moisture content
Result and Discussion
Filter Speed Conversion from Hz to RPM for 7-FT-205
Result and Discussion
Filter Cake Thickness

Disc 2 Disc 7
• Sampling date: 9 August 2018
• Density: (Stable)
Disc Speed Filter
Number 25 Hz 35 Hz 45 Hz 55 Hz
Disc 2 66.42% 65.62% 66.06% 66.28%
Disc 7 66.12% 65.78% 66.10% 66.28%
• The slower filter speed produce thicker cake and vice versa
Result and Discussion
Productivity

Sampling Date: 9 August 2018

Disc 2 Disc 7
• Higher speed filter produce higher productivity and vice versa
• From this sampling result, The productivity with speed filter 55 Hz is 1,8 times higher than 25 Hz speed filter
Result and Discussion
Moisture
Sampling Date: 9 August 2018

Disc 2 Disc 7
• The higher filter speed produce higher moisture content and vice versa
Result and Discussion
Sampling Date: 14 August 2018 (Low Vacuum Pressure and Unstable Solid Density)

• Vacuum pressure at every speed is stable at about 12 in-Hg

• The solid density at speed 25 Hz and 35 Hz were more than 65%. But for speed 45 Hz and 55 Hz were under 60%.
• Lower vacuum pressure affects to the cake thickness that will decrease the cake thickness
• The low density at speed 45 Hz and 55 Hz affect the productivity decrese significantly and lower than speed 25 Hz
and 35 Hz that have better density
Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA)
Catagorical Variables : Filter Speed and Drimax Usage
Covariant Variables : Density, Vacuum Pressure and Filter Bag Running Hours
Responses : Productivity and Moisture
Note: - If the P-value higher than α (a common α level for tests is 0.05) the variable has a significant effect to the respond
- Higher F-ratio indicates that the variable has a significant effect to the respond

For Productivity, all variables have a significant For Moisture, all variables have a significant
effect to the respond (Productivity) except filter effect to the respond (Moisture). The most
bag running hours. The most significant variables significant variables are:
are: 1. Drimax Usage
1. Density 2. Filter Bag Running Hours
2. Filter Speed 3. Filter Speed
3. Vacuum pressure 4. Density
4. Drimax Usage 5. Vacuum Pressure
Conclusion

1. At stable density and vacuum pressure, higher filter speed will increase the filter productivity, increase cake
moisture and reduce the cake thickness.

2. A. The most significant variables for Filter Productivity:

1. Density
2. Filter Speed
3. Vacuum pressure
4. Drimax Usage

B. The most significant variables for Moisture Content:

1. Drimax Usage
2. Filter Bag Running Hours
3. Filter Speed
4. Density
5. Vacuum Pressure
Next Work

• Analyzing more factors (particle size and specific drymax dosage) that
affecting the performance of Rotary Disc Filter to get more accurate
data.
• Make an optimization formula of every factors that affecting the
performance of Rotary Disc Filter
