There are two different types of cam brakes
• Single Anchor Pin (SAP) and Double Anchor Pin (DAP)

For Drive and Steer Axles

• Spacing Shims
– Located on both sides of
the automatic slack
adjuster on the camshaft
– Control the amount of axial
movement (end play) in the
camshaft
– Centers slack adjuster to
clevis.

“S” Cam Bushing Wear

“S” cam has worn through the bushing

Slack adjusters will not


compensate
for this much wear

Some cam and bushing wear is normal

Hot spots in brake drum

May be light spots with


blue halo around
Drum must be replaced
This is an indicator that
other things are wrong

Heat Checks are normal and
are caused by heating and
cooling cycles.
Heat Cracks are caused by
heat checks lining up.
If cracks grow to more than
1 ½ inch in length or go to
the open end of drum or
more than 1/16 wide, it MUST
be replaced.

May be a sign of,


Brake imbalance,
Dragging brakes,
Driver abuse.

Caused By:
Abrasive material,
Poor quality
linings,
Loose rivets.

Correction
Replace drum and
lining.

Maximum diameter is cast into the outside of the drum
Measure the drum in four locations
•Lip, outer edge
•Mid point of the wear surface
•Bottom point of the wear surface
•Repeat the bottom measurement at 90º
•.010 Maximum variation allowed

All brake drums have the maximum usable inside diameter indicated.
Typical truck drums can wear 1/8th. of an inch. That is 1/16th. of an inch of lip.
Ideally linings and drums get changed together.
DO NOT TURN DRUMS (Transit is an exception)

ASA 5™ Slack Adjuster Installation

Trailers: Set large clevis pin


Check for ½ inch hand pull or
hole 6 ½ inches from air
free stroke
chamber face.
Tractors: Set large clevis pin
hole 2 5/8 inches from the
chamber face.

• Check for Maximum Applied Stroke with 80 to 90 PSI.
• Identify chamber size and compare stroke to TMC guide lines.
