Stress Management of Employees in

Public Sector and Private Sector

Banks in Kottayam District

– A Comparative Study
INTRODUCTION

• The highly competitive banking industry has levied varied requirements


on employees resulting into stress.

• The number of jobs steadily increasing has resulted in creation of new


class of young consumers with high disposable incomes causing
changes in lifestyles forms of sociality, family structure, and self-
identity. These changes fuel the rapid upward in socio-economic
mobility experienced by employees in this industry.

• According to Stoppler (2011), stress is said to contain external and


internal factors. External factors comprise the physical atmosphere and
the internal factors confirm body's ability to retort to, and cope with, the
external stress-inducing factors.
• The technological advancements put a lot of pressure on employee and
organizations, demanding more immediate and direct changes across all
functionalities. This sector is highly volatile and lack job security and need
constant up gradation of skills in order to remain in the market.

This study, thus, aims at a comparative study on the stress experienced by


employees at public sector and scheduled private sector banks. This is
done to identify the factors influencing stress level among employees,
to compare the stress level the coping strategies used by the employees.
IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

• Stress is said to have an immense influence over the lives of


individuals and the organizations.

• The employees in banking sector experiences much stress in their work


and work environment.

• The employees, both in public sector banks and private sector banks, are
prone to stress due to the competition arising the field of banking and the
increasing scope of banking services at the present era.

• Stress, above an acceptable level deteriorate the work life balance of the
employees.

• This study tries to compare the stress experienced by employees in public


sector banks and private sector banks; thereby moving to a conclusion
regarding which sector is more workers friendly.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

• Stress management is highly essential for enhancement of employee’s

satisfaction and productivity.

• Banking industry plays important role in the developing the country's

economy is not an exceptional one. The job nature of banking employees is

very tedious as it involves the direct customer interaction in all levels.

• Banks, which manages the stress of their employees effectively and provides

flexible work options, can attract and retain best employees.

• This will leads to the maintenance of better employer-employee and

employee - customer relationship.


The research problem can be investigated from the following:

• What are the internal factors causing stress among the employees in public
sector and scheduled private sector bank?

• What are the external factors causing stress among the employees in public
sector and scheduled private sector bank?

• Whether the stress experienced by female employees in these two bank


sectors is same or not?

• Whether the stress experienced by male employees in these two bank


sectors is same or not?

• What are the methods and techniques used to reduce job related stress in
these banks?
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1. To assess the internal factors causing stress among the employees in


public sector and scheduled private sector bank.

2. To assess the external factors causing stress among the employees in


public sector and scheduled private sector bank.

3. To identify and compare the stress level among female employees in


public sector banks and scheduled private sector banks.

4. To identify and compare the stress level among male employees in


public sector banks and scheduled private sector banks.

5. To identify different methods and techniques used to reduce job related


stress in these banking sectors.

6. To make suggestions and recommendations based on the findings of


the study.
HYPOTHESES OF THE STUDY

 There is no significant difference between the internal factors causing


stress among the employees in public sector banks and scheduled private
sector banks.

 There is no significant difference between the external factors causing


stress among the employees in public sector banks and scheduled private
sector banks.

 There is no significant difference between the present levels of stress of


female employees in both the banking sectors.

 There is no significant difference between the present levels of stress of


male employees in both the banking sectors.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY

 The study concentrates on the stress management of employees in public


sector banks and private sector banks.

 Due to the mass of respondents, it is necessary to limit the scope of the


study. As a result, the study is conducted only among employees of public
sector banks and private sector banks in Kottayam district.

 This study is not intended as an exhaustive survey of all aspects in the field
of banking. Rather, the study aims to conduct a comparative study on the
factors of stress management of employees in public sector banks and
private sector banks and various techniques used to reduce stress in these
banks.

 From the mass of bank employees, 80 respondents were selected using


convenient sampling method.
METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY

The present study is based on both primary and secondary data. For the
purpose of the study, the primary data was collected using questionnaire
method. The secondary data are from various journals, bulletins,
magazines and internet.

Area of the study: The study is conducted among employees of public


sector banks and private sector banks in Kottayam district.

Sample size: Data were collected from 80 respondents in Kottayam


district. Inorder to select the samples, convenient sampling method was
adopted.

Tools of the study: The collected data were analysed using various
statistical and mathematical tools like………………… and the hypothesis
were tested using……………………..
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

 Due to some personal constraints, the number of samples is restricted to 80


respondents.

 The study was conducted among the employees of public sector and
scheduled private sector banks in Kottayam district only.

 The convenience sampling method has its own limitations and this study is
not free from such limitations.

 Some of the respondents hesitated to fill the questionnaires considering it


wastage of time, as they were busy in their daily work.

 Some employees of the banks were not free at our convenient time.

 The information collected is very much personal; hence, some respondents


do not reveal the full information.
