CHILD BIRTH PREPARATION CLASSES
LAMAZE CLASSES
• "Childbirth is something you do, not
something that happens to you."
Dr. Fernand Lamaze
DEFINITION
LAMAZEMETHOD
• A method of childbirth in which the
expectant mother is prepared psychologically
and physically to give birth without the use
of pain-relieving drugs
BENEFITS
• Normal labor and birth.
• How to be active during the birth.
• Focused breathing techniques for labor.
• Other relaxation techniques during labour
• How to communicate with your healthcare team so
your needs are met.
• Complications that could arise during labor and birth.
• Epidurals and other options for managing pain with
medication.
• Breastfeeding.
INTRANATAL PERIOD
BIRTH PREPARATION METHODS DURING
INTRANATAL PERIOD
• COMMON LAMAZE BREATHING TECHNIQUE

• Cleansing Breathing

• Slow Breathing

• Blowing Breathing

• Patterned Breathing

• Abdominal Breathing
Bradley Method

• The Bradley Method of natural childbirth (also known

as "husband-coached childbirth") is a method of
natural childbirth developed in 1947 by Robert A.
Bradley.

• Bradley Method emphasizes that birth is a natural

process.
• Mothers are encouraged to trust their body and focus
on diet and exercise throughout pregnancy; and it
teaches couples to manage labor through deep
breathing and the support of a partner or labor coach.
SOPHROLOGY

Three basic principles:

To bring the person into present time, the NOW,
To reinforce positive action, in order to develop the positive
elements of the present, the future and the past rather than
focussing on the negative .
To develop an objective reality, to learn how to see the things
more as they are rather than how we think they are.
EPIDURAL ANALGESIA
• Epidural analgesia is considered by many as the gold
standard analgesic technique for major surgery.
• It has the potential to provide suitable patients with
complete analgesia for as long as the epidural is
continued.
• This is usually achieved with a combination of epidural
local anaesthetic and an opioid.
• Epidural techniques are particularly effective at
providing dynamic analgesia, allowing the patient to
mobilize and resume normal activities unlimited by
pain.
Epidural anesthesia
PAIN RELIEF IN LABOR
Advantages of Epidural Analgesia Provides
• superior pain relief during first and second stages of
labor
• Facilitates patient cooperation during labor and delivery
• Provides anesthesia for episiotomy or forceps delivery
• Allows extension of anesthesia for cesarean delivery
• Avoids opioid-induced maternal and neonatal respiratory
depression.
Water birth
A cord blood banking
• A cord blood banking is a facility which stores
blood which is collected from the umbilical cord
for future use.
• Cord blood collection happens after the umbilical
cord has been cut and is extracted from the foetal
end of the cord, diverting up to 75 mL from the
neonate.

• It is usually done within 10 minutes of giving

birth.
CRYOPRESERVATION
• Stem cells can then be added to a liquid
nitrogen tank which will keep the cord blood
unit frozen at -196 °C.
BENEFITS
Currently used in the treatment of several life
threatening diseases
Blood and immune system related genetic
diseases.
Cancers.
Blood disorders like
Leukaemia,
Sickle cell disease,
HUMAN MILK BANKING

• A human milk bank is a service established for

collecting, screening, processing, storing and
distributing donated human milk.

INTERNATIONAL STATEMENT
• "Where it is not possible for the biological mother to
breast feed, the first alternative, if available, should be
the use of human milk from other sources."

WHO and UNICEF

THE INTERNATIONAL MILK BANKING
INITIATIVE (IMBI
GOALS
• Promote safe, ethical and accountable human
milk banking around the globe.
• Promote donor breast milk as the optimal
choice for preterm and sick infants when the
mother's own milk is not available.
• Facilitate international links between national
milk banking associations and between
individual milk banks.
Each batch of milk is tested for bacterial counts before
pasteurization.
Heat treatment of milk occurs at 56°C for 30 minutes
PRESERVING MILK

• Fresh-raw milk must be stored continually at

4ºC for no longer than 72 hours following
expression.

• Whereas fresh-frozen milk can be held at 20ºC

for 12 months.
KANGAROO MOTHER CARE (KMC
BENEFITS
• Thermal control
• Breastfeeding
• stronger bonding with the baby
• Early discharge
• Less morbidity
Some Herbs and Other Ayurvedic Tips
for Normal Delivery
• Evening primrose oil (ayurveda herb) contains
prostaglandins. Use of this oil will cause the
cervix to ripen more easily and quickly.

• Also you can use the false unicorn root and

red raspberry leaf in order to ripen the cervix.
MIND-BODY MEDICINE:
AROMATHERAPY
Mechanism of action:
MUSIC THERAPY
HYPNOBIRTHING
• Hypnotherapy has long been used in relation to childbirth. It is
sometimes used during pregnancy to prepare a mother for birth,
and during childbirth to reduce anxiety, discomfort and pain

Benefits of hypnobirthing:
considerably shorter labour and birthing. Significantly fewer surgical
births.

• Decreased average length of labour.

• Lower cesarean section rates.
• Decreased use of pain relief medication such as epidurals.
• Increased ease and comfort of labour and birth (self-reported and
observed).
BIRTH BALL
• Sitting in labor is generally uncomfortable for moms in labor.
However, sitting on a birth ball is usually more comfortable
because it contours to the body. Sitting on the birth ball also
allows her to take the pressure off of her legs and feet for a
while. Sitting on the birth ball helps the mother to relax by
allowing her to rock slowly which provides great movement
for the baby as well. Sitting on the birth ball is an excellent
comfort measure labor.
MANIPULATIVE AND BODY-BASED PRACTICE:
MASSAGE

• Mechanism of action
Massage

Stimulates release of endorphins

Stimulates the large diameter nerve fibres

Close the pain gate

Stimulates the mechanoreceptors

Improves the circulation

Improves oxygenation to tissues

removes toxins through lymphatic systems.

LEG MASSAGE
• CIRCULAR HIP MASSAGE
ACUPRESSURE
Acupressure

Unblocking the various channels of the body

Improves the energy flow

Improves blood flow

Blood detoxification

Gradual improvement of functioning of all organs

• ENERGY MEDICINE BASED:
ACCUPUNCTURE: the treatment is to restore
the balance of the universal energy in the
body, through the painless application of fine
needles into strategic points on the body.
ACUPUNCTURE
• Mechanism of action:
Acupuncture

Release of prostaglandins and oxytocin

Stimulates uterine contractions,Ripens the cervix

Dilates the cervix

Relieves labour pain (counter irritation effect of the needles )

Acupuncture Enhances Fertility by

• Enhance hormone regulation.

• Regular menstrual cycles.

• Protect the fragile embryo.

• Reduces stress.

• Strengthen the immune system.

• REFLEXOLOGY:
REFLEXOLOGY
Reflexology
Stimulates Sensory receptors in nerve fibres of foot
Produces energy
Spreads to spinal cord
Dispersed throughout entire nervous system
Releases Endorphins
Relaxes the body, relieves blood vessels constriction
Improves circulation
Breaks the crystals deposits like uric acid which are form and settled in the feet
Benefits of reflexology:

• Is Reflexology safe during pregnancy?

it is recommended that treatments be avoided
during the first 12 weeks, during this period
the body is adjusting to hormonal changes.
• ARTIFICIAL REPRODUCTIVE
TECHNOLOGY
• IN VITRO FERTILIZATION AND
EMBRYO TRANSFER
• ZYGOTE INTRAFALLOPIAN TRANSFER

• THE INTRA-CYTOPLASMIC SPERM

INJECTION (ICSI) TECHNIQUE.
• SURROGACY
