LESSON 2 STEM & LEAF
QUICK WRITE

Write down the definitions of the following words:

Mean
Median

Range
Maximum

BRAINSTORM

Today, we’re going to see how we can

use a stem and leaf use it to organize
data.
Can you tell me how you think we’ll be
organizing our data on a stem and leaf?
DEFINE

A stem and leaf plot is a special table where each data Hint :The first digit of 15 is 1 so that is it’s
value is split into “stems” and “leaves” stem and 5 is the last so it’s the leaf. Now
there are two values that are 15 you will
have to put two 5’s as leaves
Stem: The first digit or digits. The stems are listed down.
The stem is used to group the scores. The stems will Stem Leaves Key
always be > 0. It is best to write in ascending order to 1 55 1 | 5 = 15
help evaluate data. 2 13366
Leaves: The last digit of the value. The leaf values go to 3 0
the right (or left) from the stem. Each leaf shows the 10 2
individual scores within a group. The leaves will be > 0 and
always equal to or < 9. It is best to write in ascending
order to help evaluate data. Hint : For the number 102, the leaf will
Provide a Key!!! always be just one digit. This means that the
leaf is 2. What would the stem be?
Example: 15,15,21,23,23,26,26,30, 102
EXAMPLE 1

Robert has 6 children with the ages of 41, 40, 38, 36, 34, and 30.
A. Create a stem and leaf table with the values of their ages.
B. Find the mean, median, mode and range of the data

20, 16, 14, 10, 13, 11, 10, 8, 5, 3, 2, 0, 11, 8, 5, 11, 6, 4
A. Create a stem and leaf table with the values of their ages.
B. Find the mean, median, mode and range of the data.

If you finish early, create your own

figure out its mean, median, mode

LESSON 3 BOX & WHISKERS
DEFINE

Quartiles are the values that divide a list of numbers in quarters. To find them:
 Put the list of numbers in order
 Cut the list into four equal part
 The quartiles are at the “cuts”. Sometimes a “cut” is between two numbers, then the quartile is the average of the two
numbers
 Lower Quartile: The first “cut”, Quartile 1.
 Middle Quartile: The second “cut”, Quartile 2, also the median of the set.
 Upper Quartile: The third “cut”, Quartile 3
 Interquartile Range is from Quartile 1 to Quartile 24 To find it just subtract Q1 from Q3.
BOX AND WHISKERS
How can we create a box and whisker diagram?
What will you need to know?

EXAMPLE 1

Mariana’s children’s birthday lands on these dates:

29 1 17 10 25 1
Arrange the dates in order.
A. Find the quartiles and the interquartile range.
B. State maximum and minimum.
C. Then create a box and whiskers diagram with
the data.

Mariana’s grandchildren’s birthday lands on these dates. Arrange the dates in order to find the quartiles and the
interquartile range. State the maximum and minimum. Create a box and whiskers plot.
