WHAT IS CHEMISTRY
the study of matter, its
properties, structure,
composition, and the
energy that
accompanies change
BRANCHES OF CHEMISTRY
INORGANIC CHEMISTRY
ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY

BIOCHEMISTRY
INORGANIC CHEMISTRY
- is the study of chemical
elements and their
compounds with the
exception of carbon
compounds
ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
- ismost simply
defined as the study
of the compounds of
carbon
ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
= dealsmostly with
the composition of
substances
ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
= This science seeks to
improve means of
measuring chemical
composition of natural
and artificial materials.
1.In medicine, a physician
diagnose disease and chart
progress.
2. The nutritional value of food is
determined through chemical
analysis.
3. Many household products are
analyzed by analytical
chemistry.
PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY
- deals with the relations
between the physical
properties of substances and
their chemical formations
along with their changes
= This also provides a basis
for other branches of
chemistry, such as
organic, inorganic, and
analytical chemistry.
BIOCHEMISTRY
- is a science that is
concerned with the
composition and changes
in the formation of living
species
- This type of chemistry
utilizes the concepts of
organic and physical
chemistry to make the world
of living organisms seem
much clearer.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS
 As chemistry has been
commercialized for our
benefit, a number of
specialized commercial
fields have developed like:
 Polymer Chemistry
 Agricultural and Food
Chemistry
 Paint and Coatings
Chemistry
 Medicinal Chemistry
 Household Chemistry
ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY
 Environmental chemists identify
chemical pollutants and determine
what quantities are present in soil,
water, and air.
 Together with other scientists, they
determine the sources of pollutants
and to evaluate their effects on
plant, animal, and human life.
WHY STUDY CHEMISTRY?
CHEMISTRY will open up new worlds,
help you discover new ideas, and teach you
new things.
But first, you will have to be a part of a
team, you must remember two (2) things:

1. Do not be discouraged with the task

at hand ; and

2. Learning should always be fun.

YOU PROBABLY KNOW:

1. that in our material world, the earth, the

ocean, and the atmosphere are composed
of chemical substances

2. that the challenge of preserving our

environment requires knowledge of
chemistry
YOU PROBABLY KNOW:
3. that many things we use daily are
products of chemistry and these include
soaps, toothpaste, cosmetics and
toothbrushes

4. that medicines, from aspirin to

cancer drugs, also are products of
chemistry
YOU PROBABLY KNOW:
5. that our bodies are an enormously complex
mixture of chemical substances, which act
together to sustain life
6. Perhaps you want to satisfy your curiosity about our world,
recognizing that science seeks to understand the natural
world. It may be concerned about the quality of the
environment and aspect that studying chemistry will help you
understand environmental issues

7. Perhaps you are planning a career in one of the

medical sciences, such as nursing or physical
therapy, or one of the engineering sciences, or
biology or forestry, or chemistry.
“Understanding Chemistry
is essential for all sciences
much that we buy is
composed of chemicals.
Knowledge of Chemistry
will make us informed
consumers and voters.”
