Recycling Lab

Noelle J, Zoe H, Cloe U.

What’s our goal?
- To produce recycled paper from a variety of paper
- Newspaper
- Lined paper
- White paper

- To test the durability of recycled paper, and manufactured

paper

- Create a paper that is both efficient and pleasing to the eye

(smooth)
Why did we choose this?

“ We chose this subject to elaborate on a more for a clear

understanding of how recycled paper is made, and if it’s
effective to produce, use, and substitute for, ultimately, a
better environment and ecosystem.”
What are the methods?
- To make pulp (paper material + lint + water) of an isolated concoction or
mixture of two papers.
- Test the durability by applying weights to the middle of the paper.
- Continue to play with how much weight each paper can hold, with the
goal to see which can hold on longer, and which breaks the easiest.
- Produced new recycled paper made from the strongest durability of the
recycled paper (Newspaper + Lined paper)
What are the results?
- Majority of recycled paper have weak bonds
- Lined Paper
- White Paper
- Newspaper/White Paper
- Newspaper/Lined Paper

- Majority of processed of paper have stronger bonds

- Lined Paper
- White Paper

Newspaper (recycled) outweighed the manufactured paper.

Data of Recycled Paper
The amount of grams (weight) that the recycled paper is capable of holding
before tearing.

Recycled Paper
Discussion
- The paper had changed durability in the process of recycling.
- When we tested the original un-recycled paper, we found that the
strongest paper was plain white printer paper, the weakest being the
newspaper.
- The strongest paper was the newspaper.
- The density of the water-paper mixture had a lot to do with the results.\
- The newspaper was a lot thicker when in the water mixture and we
couldn’t control the consistency.
- Our final products came out with different thickness so that also
affected how much weight it would hold.
What did we conclude?
- The goal of our project was to determine the durability by comparing the
developed recycled paper and manufactured paper.
- We learned that from our process and observation, the processed paper has more
durability compared to the majority of the recycled paper.
- We also learned that from experimenting with the amount of material used to
make one sheet of recycled paper can determine the density/durability of itself
when tested.
- We recognize that we did not monitor the amount of pulp made up of paper(s)
and lint, which we knew affected our results.
- The recycled newspaper was thicker and therefore more durable to held more
weight than the un-recycled newspaper due to the amount of pulp we padded on,
during the process of laying our paper.
