POWER SAVING MODE (PSM)
How it works
• PSM
• There are 2 GPRS Timers used for PSM:
• Active Timer
• Extended T3412 Timer
• Active Timer :
• Starts when the UE enters Idle state
• The UE can receive paging while the Active Timer is still running but after it expires, enters PSM mode
• The network should not send paging/ the UE should not answer to paging while it is in PSM mode
• The UE exists PSM mode by sending user data or initiating a TAU
• Extended T3412 Timer
• Starts when the UE enters Idle state
• The timer value needs to be greater than the Active Timer
• The UE will initiate a Periodic TAU when the timer expires and both Active Timer and T3412 will be reset

EXTENDED DRX (EDRX)

• The eDRX parameters are:

• Paging Time Window (PTW)
• eDRX cycle
• Both PTW and eDRX cycle timers start when the UE enters Idle mode
• eDRX cycle = PTW + Extended sleep
• The UE can receive paging while the PTW timer is running but after it expires, it enters Extended
Sleep mode
• The network should not send paging/ the UE should not answer to paging while it is in Extended
Sleep mode

INTERACTION BETWEEN PSM AND EDRX

• The UE can request the use of both PSM and eDRX during an attach or tracking area update
procedure but it is up to the network to decide to enable none, one of them or both
• If the network accepts the use of both PSM and eDRX, the extended DRX parameters provided
to the UE should allow for multiple paging occasions before the active timer expires
