Assessment Plan

Continental Boundaries
Bree Baumgartner
EDSC 440S
NGSS Standard:
Evaluate evidence of the past and current movements of continental and oceanic crust
and the theory of plate tectonics to explain the ages of crustal rocks. HS-ESS1-5

Science and Engineering Practices:

Evaluate evidence behind currently accepted explanations or solutions to determine the merits of
arguments. (HS-ESS1-5)

Disciplinary Core Ideas:

ESS2.B: Plate Tectonics and Large-Scale System Interactions
Plate tectonics is the unifying theory that explains the past and current movements of the rocks at Earth’s
surface and provides a framework for understanding its geologic history. (secondary to HS-ESS1-5), (HS-
ESS2-1)

Cross Cutting Concepts:

Patterns: Empirical evidence is needed to identify patterns. (HS-ESS1-5)
Assessment 1: Formative
Bell Work:
What are the three types of plate boundaries? Can your draw their
movements with arrows?

Answer:
Assessment 2: Formative
Plate Boundaries Worksheet
Directions: Students will follow along with my lecture as they
complete the “What’s Happening at Plate Boundaries?” side
of the worksheet. Students will then use a National
Geographic plate boundaries map of the world to complete
the “Map Exercises” side of the worksheet in groups.
Assessment 3: Summative
(Day 1)
Directions:
• Gather some colored pencils, your base map, and your Chromebook.
• GET INTO GROUPS OF 3 TO 4
• YOU WILL ROTATE TO THE FOUR DIFFERENT MAPS
• On your base map:
• You are going to use different colors/symbols to record the data you find on the laminated
maps TO your base map (handout).
• FOCUS ONLY ON THE PLATE BOUNDARIES!!!
• LOOK FOR PATTERNS!!!!
• Use different colors for the different types of data (SEISMIC vs. TOPOGRAPHY)
• Use different symbols for different types of the same data (DEEP EQ vs. SHALLOW EQ)
• Create a MAP legend including:
• Color/Symbols
• Descriptions
Base Map-
What all students will start with at the beginning of the project.
4 Data Maps:

Seafloor Age Earthquake Magnitude

Volcanoes Topography
(Day 2) Instructions:
• GET INTO TEAMS OF 1 - 2 STUDENTS & DO THE FOLLOWING:
• Determine TYPE OF BOUNDARY & highlight the types of plate boundaries on
your base maps -
• CONVERGENT
• DIVERGENT
• TRANSFORM
• COLOR CODE EACH BOUNDARY TYPE USING HIGHLIGHTERS/NEON MARKERS
• Color code the boundaries (black outlines on base map)
• WITH A DARK PEN DRAW PLATE MOTION ARROWS ON EACH SIDE OF THE MAJOR PLATE
BOUNDARIES
What Each Team Turns In….
• Each team (up to two students) creates a Google Doc, Slide, or on a
paper that includes:
• Boundary Type (20 points)
• Color/Symbol (20 points)
• Boundary Description INCLUDING (10 Points)
• Direction of movement at boundary
• Types of landforms
• Locations
• PRINT YOUR DESCRIPTIONS (IF ELECTRONIC) & TURN IN THAT WITH
YOUR BASE MAPS
