Introduction
Home Depot as an organization was founded on the
principals of customer service and having employees
that were experienced in what they were selling and
could give sound advise to the customer.

During 2000-2007, Home Depot was experiencing

stagnation of profits and had hired a brand new,
unproven CEO, Frank Blake, in 2007 to fix the company.
Home Depot Core Values

-Excellent Customer
Service.Customers are The Home
Depot's business. ...

-Taking Care of Our People. Our

associates are key to our success. ...

-Building Strong Relationships. Trust,

honesty and integrity are the
foundations of strong relationships.

“The best advice, period, was given to me the first day on
the job from my wife, Liz: ‘Don’t forget, it’s not about
you,’”

-Frank Blake, former CEO of Home Depot, 2011

Identifying the need for an evaluation

Home Depot was experiencing a high amount of debt and

stagnating profits under former CEO
Customer service survey results were less than desireable
Core beliefs and competencies that the organization was
known for had been pushed to wayside
USA experiencing the Great Recession during time period
and was looking to increase profitability
Initial steps
Frank Blake contacted founders to
invigorate the old culture that had given
birth to the success of the organization

Implemented new managerial training that

focused more on customer service to build
customer loyalty

Immediately identified non profitable

portions of business to sell off and inject
capital back into the business
Kirkpatrick Evaluation Model

Reaction – Sales training program for managers that showed that only
3 of 125 manager didn’t rate it a 5 out of 5

Learning – Home Depot implemented the LearningCounts program to

offer college credits for on the job skills that are learned

Behavior – Customer service skills improved as measured by the

decrease in customer complaints and comments

Results – Increased profitability from 127% from 2007-2015

Competitors?

Efforts by Frank Blake to reinvest in the company culture

instead of cutting costs and programs allowed for Home Depot
to not only survive the Great Recession, but to surpass its
nearest competitor, Lowes, by a very large margin of
profitability.

When comparing the timeframes of 2007-2015, Home Depot

realized a 127 percent growth in profits compared to Lowes 67
percent profits for the same time period
Conclusion

Back to basics approach resulted in organization culture that

supported the core values and beliefs of the organization
Proper evaluation identified weak areas in business that
needed to be liquidated
