Thomas Jacob Hilfiger

* The second of nine children, he grew

up in an Irish family.

* His parents originally intended for

him to be an engineer. But rather than
furthering his education, he started to
work in retail at the age of 18.

* Hilfiger would go to New York City

to buy jeans and bell-bottom pants,
which he customized and resold at the
local downtown Elmira store, Brown’s.

* He later opened his own store, named

The People's Place, around the block
in downtown Elmira.
* After seven years, The People’s
Place went bankrupt, when he was
25.

* After turning to the design

aspect of clothing designing for
the rest of his stores in upstate
New York, Hilfiger moved to
New York City.

* In 1984, he founded the

Tommy Hilfiger Corporation
(NYSE:TOM), which went public
in 1992, introducing his signature
menswear collection. By 2004 the
company had 5,400 employees
and revenues in excess of $1.8
billion. Hilfiger was named
Menswear Designer of the Year
by the Council of Fashion
“…it’s all about colors..”
COLOUR & FUN :-
Easy-flowing fabrics without any tricky cuts dictate this
collection and gives it a carefree and cheerful look.
Attires like- a pair of light-as-air drawstring pants worn
with a tummy-grazing silk pique tee, or a clean white
taffeta dress with brisk orange grosgrain ribbon, makes it
casual as well as funky.
With his Spring 2004 collection, he
dusted off preppy classics.

His Trick Tonight was displayed via hot

hues like apple green, neon pink, orange,
and blue, all played off white basics. He
loosened up the silhouette, too, with
full-leg jeans, billowy sheer hoodies, and
silky pleated skirts.
Tommy Hilfiger’s return to the runway with a more polished take on
traditional American sportswear. He says,
"It's a continuous evolution“.
This collection is all about “carefree confidence" and
"effortless elegance." This meant some very familiar
staples, including the trench, the brass-buttoned
blazer, the shirtdress. A double-breasted navy jacket in
coarse gabardine was worn over a pair of striped silk
pajamas (kicking off a bonanza of stripes, both candy-
colored and nautical). Silk blouses went with sailor
pants, wide trousers, or cuffed shorts. And then came
a few dress variations: fine knit intarsia shifts, a
trench-detailed sheath, a flirty pink-and-white halter.
Laced spectator sandals and straw hats underlined the
Gatsby feel. Looking newer was a sharp-shouldered
striped blazer that brought some Keith Richards edge
to a white jersey dress.
"From the Catwalk to the
Sidewalk Award" at the first
VH1 Fashion and Music
Awards (in 1995), and was
named the 1995 Menswear
Designer of the Year by the
Council of Fashion
Designers of America.
