Effect of Alloying addition

 Si : Latent heat of fusion : 1411 J/g
Al : Latent heat of fusion : 396 J/g
K Si : 83W/mK ; K Al : 205 W/mK
There fore alpha Al moves faster than Si , in Al-Si
eutectic , Si plates are formed . Faster cooling rate
changes morphology of Si from plate/flakes to fine
fibrous . Adding Sr as modifier also changes the
morphology of eutectic Si .
Si decreases melting point , melt viscosity . No
effect on surface tension .
Si makes Al alloy harder , Si improves machine-
ability .
Mg : Mg in Al Si alloy forms Mg2Si precipitate in age
hardening .
Mg : do not decrease melting point as much as Si
Mg improves hot working
Mg decreases surface tension
