ARTS RESEARCH 9
INTRODUCTION

• Music is an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and

emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm,
melody, harmony, and color. Instruments and singing are
those that can produce musical sounds. Singing is the act of
producing musical sounds with the voice and augments
regular speech by the use of sustained tonality, rhythm, and a
variety of vocal techniques. A person who sings is called
a singer or vocalist (in jazz and popular music). Singers perform
music (arias, recitatives, songs, etc.) that can be
sung with or without accompaniment by musical instruments.
Singing is often done in an ensemble of musicians, such as
a choir of singers or a band of instrumentalists. Singers may
perform as soloists or accompanied by anything from a single
instrument (as in art song or some jazz styles) up to a symphony
orchestra or big band.
INTRODUCTION
• There are different types of Music but in this ---- we are
focusing on classical music. Classical music is a very
general term which normally refers to the
standard music of countries in the Western world. It is
music that has been composed by musicians who are
trained in the art of writing music (composing) and
written down in music notation so that other musicians
can play it. Classical music may also be described as
"art music" though it was not good in classical period
that term also includes types of serious modern music
which are not classical. Classical music differs from pop
music because it is not made just in order to be popular
for time or just to be a commercial success. It is different
from folk music which is generally made up by ordinary
members of society and learned by
future generations by listening, dancing and copying.

PABLO REBADULLA

• A third dominant poetic form used by the revolutionaries is no less

than the love lyric. The revolutionary love song may have evolved
from the folk songs of Leyte and Samar. ”Folk songs,” Sugbo
notes,” make the bulk of documented folk poetry in Waray.”
These songs” were sang to woo the maidens since most of them
dwelt in love.” Indeed, the love lyric has a long tradition in Waray
literature. Even ilustrados like Norberto Romualdez and Iluminado
Lucente ventured into the production of lyrical love songs. A very
popular love song, for instance, is Lucente’s “Dinumdum ko
Ikaw,” a translation of a Rizal poem: “Kon harapit na an adlaw/
• matunod ngan ha imohirayo ako/ nsputok an akon kakulba ha
dughan/ … pagpula had sidlangan/ pagpunias han adlaw/
pagkalpad han maya/dinumdum ko ikaw”( When the sun is
sinking/ And I am away from you/My heart throbs with fear/When
the eastern sky reddens/When the new morn dawns/ When the
mayas take flight/I think of you)(97). This tradition is continued by
Pablo Rebadulla in his “Basuni.”He bacame vice governorof
