to the heart. Capillaries are minute thin-walled
vessels that connect the arterioles and venules; it is
through the capillaries that nutrients and wastes are
exchanged between the blood and body tissues.
Artery

Artery, in human physiology, any of

the vessels that, with one exception,
carry oxygenated blood and
nourishment from the heart to the tissues
of the body. The exception, the
pulmonary artery, carries oxygen-
depleted blood to the lungs
for oxygenation and removal of
excess carbon dioxide.
Arterioles
 Arterioles
are the smallest arterial channels and
are generally less than 100 µm in diameter and
with one to three layers of smooth muscle cells in
the tunica media. In arterioles, the tunica media
contains only one or two layers of smooth
muscle cells. Contraction of the smooth muscle
cells constricts the lumen of the arteriole,
increasing vascular resistance and reducing the
flow of blood. Arterioles regulate the flow of
blood into capillary beds.
Vein

Veins serve a critical function within our bodies. When

blood has been pumped by the
heart to various parts of the body, it must
return back to the heart. In a metaphorical sense,
veins are the return portion of a round-trip plane
ticket. The veins serve the purpose of
delivering the blood, now bluish in color, back to
the right atrium (chamber) of our heart. In the
heart, blood will collect more oxygen and
prepare to be pumped back out through
arteries. This is a cycle that continues as long
as a person is living.
Venules

A venule is a small blood vessel in the

microcirculation that allows deoxygenated
blood to return from capillary beds to larger
blood vessels called veins. Venules range from 8
to 100μm in diameter and are formed when
capillaries come together. Many venules unite
to form a vein.
Capillaries

 Capillariesdeliver nutrients and oxygen to tissues and remove

the byproducts of cellular reactions, such as carbon dioxide
and water. With the exception of the lungs, where the
opposite is true, capillaries bring oxygenated blood, blood-
carrying oxygen, to organs and carry away deoxygenated
blood, blood with the oxygen removed. Capillaries
are selectively permeable, which means they allow some
substances through but not others. Their permeability is what
allows them to carry out their job, and how permeable they
are varies depending on the organ or tissue they are found in.
