QUIZ
Types of Motions
• A rigid body free to move within a reference frame will, in the
general case, have complex motion, which is a simultaneous
combination of rotation and translation. In three-dimensional
space, there may be rotation about any axis (any skew axis or
one of the three principal axes) and also simultaneous
translation that can be resolved into components along three
axes.
• Reuleaux coined the term lower pair to describe joints with surface contact
(as with a pin surrounded by a hole) and the term higher pair to describe
joints with point or line contact. However, distinction between lower and
higher pair is not so dark and one pair can become the other.
• The main practical advantage of lower pairs over higher pairs is their better
ability to trap lubricant between their enveloping surfaces. The lubricant is
more easily squeezed out of a higher pair, non enveloping joint. As a
result, the lower pairs are preferred for low wear and long life
One-freedom joint
or Full joint means
one degree of
freedom-joint ( or
pair).
