PROPOSAL: AWIM, A WORLD IN MOTION

 AWIM: A WORLD IN MOTION
AWIM is an internationally recognized program initiated by SAE- Society of
Automotive Engineers, India to promote effective learning and understanding of
science amongst the youth.
AWIM includes a number of challenges for young students of 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th std
students. However, in India only the Jettoy Challenge for 6th std students and
Skimmer challenge for 5th grade students has been initiated.

•Promote Science literacy
•Foster curiosity and creativity
•Provide opportunities for experimental learning
•Enhance the thought-‐building process
•Emphasize cooperative learning and teamwork
•Lead to an overall development in the personality
 JETTOY CHALLENGE- An Overview
Students make balloon powered toy cars . Their challenge is to design an
appealing toy that performs in a specific way such as:-
•Travels fast
•Carries weight
•Covers maximum distance
• Travels for long
•Travels up to a define target (accuracy)

Students experiment with different chassis design and different nozzle sizes to
determine their effect on the jet-toy’s performance.

Approach:-
A Design Team is made, consisting of around 4 students. The making of the Jet-toy
is then divided into various stages which are as follows :-
•Knowledge Building
• Designing
•Testing
 SKIMMER CHALLENGE- An Overview
Students make fan driven sail boats . Their challenge is to design an appealing toy
that performs in a specific way such as:-
•Turn-ability
•Carries weight
•Covers maximum distance
• Travels for long
•Travels up to a define target (accuracy)

Students experiment with different hull design and different sail shapes to
determine their effect on skimmer’s performance.

Approach:-
A Design Team is made, consisting of around 4 students. The making of the
Skimmer is then divided into various stages which are as follows :-

SAE Regions Under SAENIS for 2018: Delhi Z1, Delhi Z2,
NIS Gurgaon, NCR (Gzbd, Frdbd, Noida), Kurukshetra
 MTTP: MASTER TEACHERS’ TRAINING PROGRAM
MTTP is a workshop/training conducted for:
•AWIM University Volunteers from different engineering colleges.
•School teachers (2): Science teacher, Art teacher.
•Industry Volunteers.

Last year, The MTTP was organized by the well- known industry, Maruti Suzuki India
Ltd. on 21st July 2017 at Maple Emerald Hotel, Delhi wherein we learned how to
build the toy, test it and finally present it. The duration of the workshop was 7-8 hrs. This
year, the MTTP will be held on 28st July,2018 (tentatively) .

What do we teach in the workshop?

•To design balloon powered toy cars- Jet-toy and Sail boats-skimmer.
•Teams of 4-5 are formed, consisting of industry volunteers, university volunteer and school
teachers.
•University volunteers and teachers experiment with different chassis designs and nozzle
sizes to determine their effect on the jet-toy's and skimmer’s performance.
•Kits to make both jet-toy and skimmer are provided.
•Each team work together to form their toy, give it a name and logo. They also present their
toy, giving their various features.
•Finally, the toys are tested on tracks made on flat surface. Final conclusions are made and
improvements are also made in the toy for it to give a better performance.
MTTP Glimpses
 TEACHING THE SCHOOL STUDENTS

The knowledge acquired by the AWIM student volunteers and teachers, is

then passed onto the 6th grade and 5th grade students, through a number
of teaching lessons taken in the school hours.
Time commitment: 4-6 weeks with teaching lessons of 1-2 hours
per week.
 PARTICIPATION AT REGIONAL, NATIONAL AND
INTERNATIONAL LEVEL

•Participating teams from different schools present their toy and compete in
the zonal, national and international Jettoy and Skimmer Olympics.
•For presenting an appealing toy, students can win prizes up to INR 20,000,
along with medals and certificates issued by SAE, India.
