What is “Mobile Computing”?
Mobile computing is to describe technologies that
enable people to access network services
anyplace, anytime, and anywhere,
with portable and wireless computing and
communication devices.
It is human–computer interaction by
which a computer is expected to be
transported during normal usage, which
allows for transmission of data, voice
and video. Mobile computing involves
mobile communication, mobile
hardware, and mobile software.
Principle on which the Devices on which the
mobile computing works mobile computing works
 Portability: Facilitates movement of Smart cards that can run multiple
device(s) within the mobile applications but are typically used
computing environment. for payment, travel and secure area
 Connectivity: Ability to continuously access.

environment. digital Laptop
 Individuality: Adapting the
Smartphones and tablets
technology to suit individual needs.

Just as in any connected network, the mobile computing also involves
distinct and inter-connected components-

1) Mobile hardware 2) transmission towers

3) mobile software and apps.
The mobile hardware includes smart
phones, PDAs, tablets, tablet PC’s among

Mobile communication includes vast array

of protocols, transmission towers,
bandwidth, satellite systems and networks.
A mobile application, most commonly referred to
as an app, is a type of application
software designed to run on a mobile device.
Application Of Mobile Computing
Several devices such as palm computers, mobile phones
and laptops make use of programs that are needed for
internet connectivity and other computer related activities.
This is called as mobile computing applications.

How Mature is Mobile Computing?
Mobile computing is not a new field. Portable computer terminals
have been used in various business domains for over two decades
in both connected and disconnected fashion.
In the connected world, remote access terminals have been used in
applications such as remote police car terminals, taxi dispatching
terminals and package delivery. For example, UPS introduced its
delivery information acquisition device in the early '90s. These
terminals have provided communication facilities and access to
domain-specific databases from remote locations through the use
of wireless bandwidth links.
In the disconnected world, remote
terminals have been used in inventory
and stocking applications to gather
data. The remotely gathered data is
then transferred to central databases
through fixed communication links.
Inventory control tracking systems are
typical examples of this usage
What's new in Mobile Computing?
A number of synergistic technology improvements have driven the
rapid advances in mobile computing:
• Central Processing Unit (CPU) advances are providing powerful
computational abilities with lower power consumption.
• Memory technology is making it practical to build devices with
large memory capacities in reasonable power consumption
• Touch-screen interface technology is removing the need for
separate keyboards.
• Battery technology is supplying useful power reserves
while requiring smaller amounts of space.
• Wireless network bandwidth is becoming more
powerful, providing greater data transfer speeds at
reasonable costs.
• Open communication protocols such as TCP/IP and
• Decoupling the user device from server resources in a
standardized fashion.
How Can You Lever Mobile Computing

The extent to which you can lever up the capabilities of mobile computing
depends on our business
processes. The important characteristic of mobile computing is portable
access to your data and applications.
While mobile computing can present advantages in the implementation
of your business processes, there are associated challenges:

Career Opportunities in Mobile Computing

 The growth of mobile computing has spawned several new career options
from hardware servicing to software, operating system, mobile computing
applications (apps) development.

 The main beneficiaries in this regard are engineering graduates, post

graduates, diploma holders, computer applications professionals who have
done Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) or Master of Computer
Applications (MCA).

 Some of the hot job openings are:

Game developers, mobile hardware technicians, IPAD developer, mobile
apps testing specialist, developer for Android, Blackberry, iPhone, Windows,
tower installation and maintenance for network, mobile computing security
Industry opportunities

Apart from job opportunities for engineers and IT professionals,

huge opportunities
are awaiting service providers in mobile computing.
Every American between the age of 16 and 80 are prospects or
customers for industry, according to Jim Blasingame, contributor to
Forbes magazine. He is the author of the award-winning book, ‘The
Age of the Customer: Prepare for the moment of relevance’.
According to him, if businesses are not mobile ready, they are going
to become extinct like the dinosaurs in no time.
Future Of Mobile Computing

Smartphones have the potential to make the mobile computing landscape more
confusing. As smartphones become more powerful, they begin to fill the same
niche as netbooks people get excited about higher resolution screens, front facing
cameras and dual-core processors. However the growth can be attributed to the
proliferation of software and services that take advantage of these increases in
connectivity, computing power, sensors and battery life. So, while a proclamation
that, “5G phones with 3D cameras will become the norm in 2 – 3 years,” is a
prediction that may possibly come true.

Today’s computing has rapidly grown from being
confined to a single location. With mobile computing,
people can work from the comfort of any location they
wish to.

Being and ever growing and emerging technology,

“mobile computing” will continue to be a core service in
computing and information and communication
