THE TOPIC-

ALGEBRAIC
EQUATION

INTRODUCTION TO ALGEBRA

In Arithmetic , numerals 1,2,3,4 etc . and four

fundamental operations like -
addition,subtraction,multiplication and
division are used to deal with various
problems . In Algebra , in addition to
numerals , we use letters such as x,y,z in
various situations to solve the problems . Ex
– x + 6 = 7 , 2 – y = 9 , z + 5 = 8.
z

CONSTANTS
A symbol with a
fixed value is called
a constants.
z

VARIABLES
A symbol which takes
on various numerical
values is called a
variable .
z

COEFFICIENTS
The number expressed in figures or
symbols standing before an algebraic
term as a multiplier is called its
coefficient . Thus in 3abc,3 is the
coefficient of abc , 3a is the coefficient of
bc and 3ab is the coefficient of c.
z

TYPES OF COEFFICIENTS
NUMERICAL COEFFICIENTS LITERAL COEFFICIENTS
1. When one of the factors is an 1. When the coefficient is
Arithmetic number it is expressed in letters ,it is called
always written and is called a a literal coefficient.
numerical coefficient
2. Example – coefficient of x in
2. Example – coefficient of 3 in axy is ay.
3ab is 3.

ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION
 Any combination of letters or of numerals
and letters connected by the symbols
+,-,×,÷ is called an algebraic expression.
 The several parts of an expression
connected by the signs + and – are called
the terms of the expression.
z

TERMS OF EXPRESSION
1. MONOMIAL- An expression consisting of
one term is called a monomial.
2. BINOMIAL- An expression consisting of
two terms is called binomial .
3. TRINOMIAL- An expression consisting of
three terms is called trinomial.
z

STATEMENT OF EQUALITY

The statement which expresses the equal

property in any equation or problem is
called the statement of equality .
Sign of equality is ‘=’ .
For example- 3+9=12 , 5-9=4 , 4+5=5+4
etc.
z

AN EQUATION
A statement of equality having
one or more variables is called
an equation.
For example- x+5=7, y(z)-8=40.
z
LINEAR EQUATION
An equation, which has one variable
and the highest power of the variable
in any term of the equation is one , is
called a linear equation in one
variable.
For example – x-3 =9, y+7= 10 etc.
z

IMPORTANT NOTES
1. Sign ‘=’is used for dividing the equation in
two sides , left hand side and right hand side .
2. Only the signs + and – separate the terms of
an expression. 5xy is a term whereas x-y are
two terms.
