India won 6 consecutive hockey gold medals between 1928 to 1956 and finally won
world cup in 1975. Barring 1980’s gold medal at Olympics, India’s performance in

Netherlands and Germany improved their standards and catching up with India.
 In recent years , standards of Indian hockey has gone from bad to worse , with
men’s team not qualifying for the 2008 Olympics and finishing last in 2012
Olympics. Since 2014, it is trying to regain it’s lost glory by becoming runners up at
2014 common wealth games and then winning gold medal in 2014 Asian Games
and 2017 Asia Cup to finally establish Asian dominance after long time.
 India men’s hockey team is eying for gold at 2018 Men’s Hockey World cup.

Focus Points and Steps taken
 Top 5 Focus areas to promote sports in India
 EDUCATION: Sports should become a compulsory norm in school like any other subject (part of
curriculum) and shall be implemented properly. There are enough data to show that kids who
play sports are much stronger in application of knowledge and intuitive skills than who don’t.
 INFRASTRUCTURE: Insufficient Infrastructure in our country to promote and support sports.
Many large schools, colleges and institutions have huge sporting facilities that lie unused after
school hours. Hence if we are able to leverage the existing infrastructure in a systematic way by
encouraging people to play sports and games of their choice, we will have more participation.
 MESSAGING: Educate Parents about the positive impact of sports so that they allow their kids
to balance their studies with play and realize that it improves their overall performance in
school. Similarly Schools needs to be told about the significance of inculcating a sporting
culture by avoiding over emphasis on academics and preparing for examinations as sole
criteria for performance.
Focus Points and Steps taken
 Top 5 Focus areas to promote sports in India
 INVESTMENTS: Make Brands and Corporates invest in sports. At present there
is limited awareness about the prospective impact apart from investments in
top 5-6 events like IPL, IBL, Kabaddi league etc. There are large number of
sporting events happening in the state level, district level and municipal level
which are equally important for local viewership. Brands can play an important
role in grassroots level by investing and promoting these sports.
 RESPONSIBILITY: Bring as part of Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR). CSR is
fairly expected norm of doing good to the society. Most organizations use their
CSR budgets to participate in community activities that create positive impact.
These incentives need support at the level of conceptualizing and
implementation in sports and games. To support this, Government has
included Sports in CSR Act.
