We will share current development / trends for Design and
Manufacturing of Traverser for Handling Rolling stock
including Loco, EMU / DMU / METRO Drive Coaches, LHB /
Conventional AC and non AC Coaches & Wagon.

Rail lines installed in Indian Railway Network are designed to sustain Axle Load < 25T and therefore All
Loco with weight > 90 T are designed with 6 Axles.
Please notice the Cattle Guard – required for every Drive Rolling stock (EMU /DMU / METRO)

Notice that AC Chari Car / MEMU has 4 Axles. All other rolling stock with weight < 90T has 4 Axles.

Type of Traverser
1. Based on number of Tracks:
• Multi Track Traverser with more than 2 tracks were norm till Modernisation
reached Indian Railways.
• 2 Track Traverser were developed for Cost Effective solutions when the Bay
length exceeded 50 M.
2. Based on Level of Shop and Top of Rails mounted on Traverser.
• Pit Traverser: Rails mounted on Top of Traverser and Shop Rails are at same
level – to transfer the rolling stock directly from Shop Rail to Rilas mounted
on Top of Traverser Structure i.e. Traverser Rails were installed at lower level
with Walls constructed to retain the earth and Bay area considered as Pit.
• Surface Traverser were developed so that Bay area can be used for
movement of Vehicles / Staff. Ramps also known as Bridge Over Piece or
Tongue Assembly. Haulage Winch installed on Traverser – to provide the
Traction Force to Haul the Rolling stock on Ramp.
3. Based on Structural Construction: Initially 2 Track Traverser were built with
Truss type of Structure. Unique with an expertise in Fabrication of Large Size
Box Girders developed 2 Track Traverser with Box Construction.

Importance of Maintaining Levels


For handling Non AC Conventional Coach /
Wagon (with Bottom Clearance approximately
300 mm) by Surface Traverser Higher Rail Level
Variation of between SR / TR may be
acceptable. But while handling LHB AC Coaches
with Bio Toilet consignee shall consult Qualified
Railway Engineer or Manufacturer.

INTRODUCTION TO TYPE OF TRAVERSER


Surface Traverser – With suitable selection of Entrance height by proper Tongue
Length with respect to Carriage Wheel base, rolling stock with low bottom
clearance can be handled. But it is not possible to handle the rolling stock
with Cattle guard by standard surface – as seen the picture on left.

Clients are requested to inform / confirm the bottom clearances in detail


before deciding the type of traverser, to be installed.

IMPORTANCE TO MAINTAIN LEVELS / SOLUTION


Surface Traverser is not suitable for handling Loco with Cattle Guard / Rolling Stock
with Bio toilets with Bottom clearance = 230 mm. Unique hase developed 2
Piece Tongues with Length = 1750 to ensure that Coach Wheel start riding
Tongue before reaching surfactraverser strcture @ Hight of 230 mm. .

Clients are requested to inform / confirm the bottom clearances in detail


before deciding the type of traverser, to be installed.

SR-TR-TTR LEVELS
For satisfactory performance of Traverser / handling of rolling stock without interference of
bottom components with Tongue / Traverser Structure, it is necessary to construct Bay area
and lay SR / TR, in compliance to Good Engineering Practice, as required for different type of
Traversers. Based on the levels of SR-TR-TTR, Traversers, are classified as follows:
1) Standard Surface Traverser: SR and TR are at same level and TTR is at higher level. Rolling
stock get transferred from SR to TTR by Ramps known as BOP / Tongue Assembly. Standard
Surface Traverser are not suitable to handle Rolling stock with Cattle Guard. Surface
Traverser are designed to suit bottom clearance > 100 mm to 150 between two bogies /
bottom clearance > 220 to 300 between inside wheels of bogies, with the assumption that
construction & SR / TR laying is done in compliance to Good Engineering practice.
2) Surface Traverser with slightly submerged Construction: Like Standard Surface Traverser
the TTR is at higher level then SR and Rolling Stock transferred to TTR by BOP. TR are laid at
lower level, to reduce Effective Entrance height to facilitate handling of Rolling stock with
Cattle Guard / low bottom clearances.
3) Pit Traverser: TTR / SR are at same level and Rolling Stock gets directly transferred from SR
to TTR. TR is laid at a lower level than SR. Difference in elevation of SR and TR is known as
Pit Depth.
Note:
In this presentation, Solutions given by Unique for situation arising by Non-compliance for
Surface Traverser are discussed .

D. Bottom Clearances

specially for considering the rolling stock with Cattle Guard

Consideration for Design / Construction
A Portal : Portal obstruct the view of operator
• Multi Track – Portal are not required as Cabin with
Haulage machinery is provided wheels.
• Cabin with Haulage machinery is attached to
Girders as Cantilever and therefore Portal will be
required.

B Span of track(s) and Overhang Beyond

Please allow qualified designer to engineer and
select Span(2) of tracks for minimised load on
wheels during Entry / during L.T. Travel.

select Overhang beyond the extreme tracks to
restrict slope of ground – as discussed for slightly

MOVEMENT OF OPERATING PERSONNEL WITH ROLLING STOCK
