ISRAEL/PALESTINE

INDEPENDENCE
D A V I D , B E N , B R I D G E T, L L O Y D A N D M AYA N K
COLONIAL HISTORY
Region- Middle East, sometimes
under Europe
Reason for European Rule- To
take away land from the Ottoman
Empire
Kind of colony- British Mandate
(essentially a colony of the
British)
INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT
Leaders- United Nations & Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO)
Obstacles – British Mandate after WW1 & Opposition from a majority
Arab Palestinian Majority
A Zionist movement in Europe had been advocating for a Jewish state in
the Middle East. After persecution by Hitler and the Nazis, the United
Nations created the state of Israel.

Advice – Maintain strong diplomatic relations with the UN and local

organizations. This may help in receiving aid and beneficial political
advantages such as Israel saw.
IDEOLOGY OF INDEPENDENCE
• The Zionists supported religious-nationalism,
or more specifically they supported Judaism.
• They adopted religious-nationalism since
during WWII, they fled from the Nazi regime,
but they also were rejected from various
nations turning back towards their
homeland.
• As a result of this, great conflict ensued
between the Arab and Jewish states of
former Palestine.
DEGREE OF POLITICAL STABILITY
The violence among the Israelites and the
Palestinians shows instability

Israel has a history of military unity and

repellence of attacks show stability.

Palestine is unstable due to the fact that they

are unified because of the conflict among the
PLO and Hamas (an Islamic organization
with political and military functions)
SOME LESSONS FOR ZIMBABWE
Zimbabwe should attempt to become more unified to hold
their nation-state closer together.
We should also have a strong military to repel any external
attacks
Make sure to use both war and diplomacy against our enemies
to prevent ongoing wars
Have the support of other countries to maintain a powerful
image
A patriotic population is good for the government
Separate religion for the state (be secular)
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
The Israeli have a successful economy based on a largely
capitalist market
They were supported by billions of dollars of aid from
other countries like the US
Their highly educated population is able to produce
products for the global market’
The Palestinians don’t have the education or money of the
Israelis
They mostly work as laborers for the Israeli companies
ECONOMIC LESSONS
Support from other countries is
necessary to be part of the global
economy, as we need money and
aid from others to become
successful
A highly educated population is
more likely to create a successful
economy. Make sure our people
are well-educated and have
opportunities for higher education
