Potable Water
crisis

"There is a water crisis today. But the crisis is not about having too
little water to satisfy our needs. It is a crisis of managing water so
badly that billions of people and the environment suffer
badly." World Water Vision Report
1.75 billion People are without adequate drinking water
The negative impact of an impending
water crisis
• By 2035, the world’s energy consumption will
increase by 35 %, which in turn will increase water use
by 15% according to the International Energy Agency.
• The cost of adapting to the impacts of a 2°C rise in
global average temperature could range from US $70
to $100 billion per year between 2020 and 2050
(World Bank, 2010)
• By 2025 an estimated 1.8 billion people will live
in areas plagued by water scarcity with two
thirds of the world’s population living in water
stressed regions.
• Compared to today five times as much land is
likely to be under “extreme drought” by 2050.
• 46% of the globe’s (terrestrial) surface is covered by
transboundary river basins which can lead to future
conflicts over water.
