Adding a DAC to a Sectorial

Calibration
By Nick Bublitz
DAC
 DAC=Distance Amplitude Correction
 DAC performs the same function in phased array
as in conventional ut
 The DAC curve compensates for
depth/attenuation through the material.
 Unlike TCG, DAC displays the reflectors at their
true amplitude, instead the curve lines are used to
equally evaluate reflectors to accept/reject criteria.
Up to 16 same size reflectors at varying depths
can be used to create the DAC
2
Starting Point
 Thisprocedure takes for granted that all
parameters to set up the equipment and
scan (Probe/Part and PGM Probe Menus)
have been implemented and DAC
calibration is the next step.

3
Equipment Used for this Procedure
 16:128 Omniscan
 5L16 probe
 SA1-N60S wedge
 Navship block
 Couplant-water is best

4
Preliminary Settings

 Display A-S

5
Preliminary Settings
 Set Units to Inches

6
Preliminary Settings
 Setthe DA (Depth)
reading field

7
Setting reference Amplitude
 Begin by choosing an Use Red (A) Gate to encompass
angle to set DAC with. - The signal; you want to set to
middle of angle sweep 80% and push Set 80%
best)
 Peak the reflector you
want to start DAC with-(1st
point to begin slope of
DAC-shallowest reflector)
 Adjust gain so this reflector
peaks at chosen sensitivity
level (80% FSH)-can use
UT/Advanced/Set 80%
feature or manually adjust
.25” deep reflector in Navships
8
DAC Setup
 The DAC/TCG submenu
can be found under the
Gate/Alarm menu
 Select DAC under Curve-
reference db will be set
(will be shown in left hand
corner)
 Set reference amplitude
(80% FSH)
 Adjust Curve Step (db
difference between lines)-
 6 db step is half amplitude step-
ex:80%FSH/40%FSH/20%FSH
9
Edit DAC
Change Mode from Setup to Edit
Point 1 will be earliest point
chosen-often position 0 or the point
you set reference amplitude with-you
may not adjust gain or amplitude-it
will be at reference amplitude
(80%FSH)
Choose position by typing in depth
of reflector or using dial to move to
point 1.Red dot indicates position on
sweep.
Peak 1st reflector to verify is at ref.
amplitude
Hit add point

10
Adding Points
 Move to second deepest
reflector (.50” reflector).
 Without adjusting gain,
peak this reflector.
 Move position to this
depth.
 Adjust amplitude to the
peaked amplitude of the
reflector.
 Hit add point.
 Repeat for as many
reflectors as you need to
encompass your
inspection range. (up to 16
per beam)
11
Other DAC Options
 You can Add/Delete
points at any time
using the appropriate
button.
 All created points are
selectable for
adjustment/deletion
from the point list.

12
Other DAC Options
 DAC can be turned on/off
as needed
 After completing DAC for 1
beam, the software will
create a DAC for all
remaining beams-for
accuracy each beam
should be adjusted
manually.
 To get rid of reference
gain-DAC must be in off
position and db ref. turned
off from UT/Advanced
menu.
