Use of past simple

 Past actions that are now finished.

Use of past perfect
A completed action before another action in the past
Ex: I had finished my home work before I went playing football.
Third conditional sentence
Ex: If we had gone by taxi, we would not have been late.
Reported Speech
Ex: He asked if I had read the Quran.
Dissatisfaction with the past
Ex: I wish I had taken more food. I am hungry now.
If only I had taken more food. I am hungry now.

Use of past continuous
 Duration of a past action
Ex: The boys had been quarreling for half an hour when we
arrived home.
Showing Cause
Ex: The road was wet because it had been raining.
Third conditional
Ex: If it hadn’t been raining we would have gone to the park
