Introduction

u In the past we were limited by sound invading all of the

space surrounding the loudspeaker or sound source.

Not anymore!!!!!!!

uAudio spot lighting is a very recent technology that creates

focused beams of sound similar to light beams coming out
of a flashlight.

uSpecific sound can be targeted with sound without others

nearby hearing it i.e. to focus the sound into a coherent and
highly directional beam. It makes use of non-linearity
property of air and acoustics for its working
àheory

uàhe regular loudspeakers produce audible sound by directly moving the air molecules.

uàhese loudspeakers do not travel in narrow beams i.e just about 360 degrees.

uA focused sound follows the following principle that ͞
Œ. àhis can be achieved by use of
ultrasonic sound.

àechnology Overview

uEngineers have struggled for centuries to produce a

speaker with a ideal 20Hz-20,000Hz capability of human
hearing and also produce a narrow beam of audible
sound.

uIn 1975 an article sited the non-linear effects occurring

in air. Several companies including Panasonic and Ricoh
attempted to develop a loud speaker using this principle. JOSEPH POMPEI at the MIà Lab.
Propagation of Sound beam
from AUDIO SPOàLIGHàING
uIn 1990͛s Woody Norris a Radar technician solved the DEVICE
parametric problems of this technology.

uàhe Audio spotlight technique was developed by

American àechnology Corporation.

àhe human ear is sensitive to frequencies ranging from 20 Hz to 20,000Hz.

If this is expressed as a percentage shift from the lowest audible sound to highest its spans a
range of 100,000 percent. àhis range can only be achieved by audio spotlighting.
Î"

àhe original low frequency sound is applied to a audio spotlight emitter device which is
Frequency modulated with a ultrasonic sound ranging from 21KHz ʹ 28KHz .At the output
we will get the modulated form of original sound wave.
Since the wavelength is smaller and the beam angle is around 3 degree as a result the
sound beam will be narrow one with small dispersion.
While the frequency modulated sound wave travels in air the non-linearity property of air
Comes into action and it slightly changes the sound wave.

We cannot hear the ultrasonic sound rather the new sound formed by the non-linear action of
the air. àhus in the audio spotlight the ultrasonic envelope acts as airborne speaker.
Here the listener doesn't perceive the sound emanating from the face of the transducer
but from the reflection from the wall .
 !

àhe above figure shows the dispersion of sound beam from an audio spotlighting
emitter. Even after travelling a distance of 10 m the beam covers only 3.2 meter
square

àhis mode requires an unbroken line of approach from the emitter of audio
spotlighting system.
àhe sound beam from an emitter is made reflect from a reflecting surface such
as wall surface and no physical loud speaker is present.

§It is thin and flat and don͛t requires a mounting cabinet.

§Dispersion can be controlled.

§Can eliminate the feedback from microphones.

§Highly cost effective.

§Requires only same power as regular loudspeaker.

§àhere is no lag in reproducing the sound.

§It travels much faster in a straight line than conventional loud speakers.
