PERFORMANCE BASED

ASSESSMENT
(EXPERIMENTS)
PREPARED BY

NUR ARESHA MYRA AND NURUL AMIRAH

What are classroom experiments?

 Classroomexperiments are activities where any number of

students work in groups on carefully designed guided inquiry
questions.

We found that conducting experiments in class, with

discussions before, during, and after the experiments
is an effective and enjoyable way of moving from
passive to active learning.
--Bergstrom and Miller, 1999.
• Observations
-All experiments involve collecting observations or observing actions to try to answer a question or solve a problem.

• Avoid misconceptions
- focusing on major ideas that students will need to understand correctly in order to support deep learning.

• Student-centered
- students involved in classroom experiments can be asked to make predictions and to reflect upon their
observations.

Experiments

• Materials provided
- laboratory materials, data simulation tools or a decision making environment, as well a series of questions that
lead to discovery-based learning.

• Teacher acts as facilitator

- asking leading questions and drawing attention to interesting results
• Student Learning Outcomes
• Instructor Satisfaction With Teaching
• Grades
• Attendance
• Student Retention in Course and Major
• Teaching Evaluation Scores
How to design a good Practical
Experiment Assessment?
Offer a briefing session
Active and interactive assessment
Arrange practical experiments
Video taping the students’ performance
Example
 Advice Column
Students write advice to an “anonymous friend” who has
a scientific problem that needs solved.
 Toy

Create a drawing (or a prototype) of a toy that might

have been used from the children of that specific time
period.
 Calendar
 Mark on a calendar (paper or electronic copy) the time frame for how long it
takes to see changes in a scientific event (such as erosion or plants growing).
