Explain Functions Of Power Transmission Components

Merriam-Webster defines transmission as an assembly of parts including

the speed-changing gears and the propeller shaft by which the power is
transmitted from an engine to a live axle.
Often transmission refers simply to the gearbox that uses gears and gear
trains to provide speed and torque conversions from a rotating power
source to another device.

In British English, the term transmission refers to the whole drivetrain,

including clutch, gearbox, prop shaft (for rear-wheel drive), differential, and
final drive shafts.

In American English, however, the term refers more specifically to the

gearbox alone, and the usage details are different.

a. Clutch

A clutch is a mechanical device that provides for the transmission of power (and
therefore usually motion) from one component (the driving member) to another (the
driven member) when engaged, but can be disengaged.

Clutches are used whenever the transmission of power or motion must be controlled
either in amount or over time (e.g., electric screwdrivers limit how much torque is
transmitted through use of a clutch; clutches control whether automobiles transmit
engine power to the wheels).

In the simplest application, clutches connect and disconnect two rotating shafts
(drive shafts or line shafts). In these devices, one shaft is typically attached to a motor
or other power unit (the driving member) while the other shaft (the driven member)
provides output power for work.

While typically the motions involved are rotary, linear clutches are also possible.

• Definition -one of a set of toothed wheels

that work together to alter the relation
between the speed of a driving mechanism
(such as the engine of a vehicle or the crank of
a bicycle) and the speed of the driven parts
(the wheels).

Mechanical Advantage

In machine design one often needs to

incorporate a Power Transmission between an
energy source and the desired output motion.
Examples of Power Transmission elements
include: gears, friction drives, timing belts, flat
belts, levers, and screw drives.

• Group 3 - function of gear in a transmisson in general (use
5W)
• Group 4 - describe the driver and driven in gear mechanism
• Group 5 - explain what happen when clutch is engage
(what heppen from flywheel, clutch until drive shaft )
• Group 6 - explain what happen when clutch is disengaged
• Group 7 - explain differential in general (use 5W)
• Group 8 - explain how differential work and state their
main components
Define functions of power transmission components
c. Differential unit

A differential is a particular type of simple planetary gear

train that has the property that the angular velocity of its carrier
is the average of the angular velocities of its sun and annular
gears.

What does a differential unit do in a vehicle?

Most 4-wheel drive vehicles or rear wheel drive vehicle have

rear differential. The differential works with your transmission to
deliver power from the engine to the axle that turns your wheels.
The differential also makes turning your car possible.
