Marcelino Agana Jr. is a Filipino writer,

famous for having written a classic satirical
play in one-act entitled “New Yorker in
Tondo”.
He also won the Carlos Palanca Memorial
Awards for Literature in 1956.

NEW YORKER IN TONDO

New Yorker in Tondo is a story of a girl named

Kikay who went to New York to study Hair
Culture and Beauty Science. Upon going home
after almost a year, she acquires all the New
Yorker things like style, language, looks and
manner. Her childhood friends visited her and
waited until she woke up. But all of a sudden, the
“Kikay” they knew was utterly changed.

 PLOT RISING ACTION
Upon waking up, Kikay immediately
entertained her friends. She tells
them everything she experienced in
New York. Tony, Totoy, and Nena
EXPOSITION were all in awe of what they’ve seen.
Kikay was transformed into a
Tony heard that Kikay has
different girl. She doesn’t want to be
already arrived from New York
called as Kikay, instead she wants
so he visited her. Apparently, everybody to call her Francesca.
Kikay was still in her slumber
when Tony arrived so Mrs.
Mendoza had to wake her up
first. Totoy and Nena also came
to visit Kikay.
 PLOT

CLIMAX
Kikay and Tony had the chance to be alone. Tony opened the issue
about their secret engagement. But Kikay didn’t want to listen and
even told Tony that being engaged to him is just a childhood act. Tony
became irritated of how Kikay acted so he told her that New York didn’t
bring her any good. When Nena and Totoy came back, Tony and Kikay
pretended that they are in good status so Nena opened the topic about
the other secret engagement between her and Tony.
 PLOT
FALLING ACTION
Kikay and Totoy were surprised
about the revelation. Conflict
suddenly arose between the two
girls and the boys immediately
tried to calm the situation.
DENOUMENT
Kikay realized her mistakes. She
asked Tony for forgiveness and
promised him that she will go
back to her original self. Because
of Tony’s love for her, he forgave
her and they rekindled their
romantic relationship.
 CONFLICT

Kikay has taken on all of the style and

attitude of a New Yorker and brought it with
her as she returns to the Philippines.
