“The problem with the examination system is that it is part of
a system. By methodically creating a process which shall evaluate
and determine the worth and capabilities of students and their
learning, a specific structure/pattern has been created that ought to
be followed and respected. As a consequence, students take the
pressure of scoring certain marks and working tirelessly to achieve a
particular result. Consequently, the focus of education has shifted,
from innovation and learning to score. Students in college are under
the pressure to maintain their scores rather than thinking of creative
ways to expand their horizons of knowledge.” (Kinjal Pandey, 2017)
Aim and Objective of the Research
AIM- To analyze the impact of exam & course pattern on
students’ learning

OBJECTIVE-
(i) Analyzing different exam patterns in use.
(ii) Analyzing students’ mentality towards their course
structure and exam pattern.
Literature Review
1. A STUDY CONDUCTED BY SAIMA RASUL AND QADIR
BUKHSH:
“The inappropriate structure of questions, pattern and type
of question papers, subjective marks and individual
difference in evaluating the answers, dishonest invigilating
staff, wrong marking of scripts, etc. are the main factors
which affect student’s performance in examination.”
2. AN ARTICLE BY KINJAL PANDEY IN ‘DUBEAT.COM’:

The current examination system has quantified knowledge and

has attempted to make intelligence and proficiency more
measurable. As a consequence, the number that is aimed to
signify our proficiency in a particular subject- say marks,
percentage, or Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) has now
become the end-goal. Marks are not a marker of what we have
learned the whole semester; it is now the end result. The desire
to know more and our curiosity and creativity have died in this
quest to score more.
Research Methodology
HYPOTHESIS-
Ho- Exam pattern affects the learning ability of the
students.
Ha- Exam pattern does not affect the learning students of
the students.
Research Design
-This research is a desk research. Data and statistics collected for this
research are original and derived from an authenticated source, which
is listed in the bibliography.
-This research also includes primary research in the form of
questionnaire, which has a sample size of 30. The samples of this
survey are of the age group of 18–30 years.
-The samples participating in this research are the students of PGDM
and MMS programs of VESIM BUSINESS SCHOOL, MUMBAI.
Data Interpretation and Analysis
• We also had a few open-ended questions asking the sample
about the reasons why they find their course easy, moderate or
difficult. Following were the most common answers-

 The amount of practical knowledge is less than expected.

 MMS students think that their course is not evolved.
 Most of them have already studied the subjects in their
graduation, hence they find it easy.
 Focus on core subjects should be practiced according to some
people.
• We also asked about the changes in exam or course pattern that
the sample would like to suggest. Following are the most
common answers-
 More focus on practical knowledge is required.
 MCQs and objective questions should be introduced in
examinations.
 Industrial and corporate experience should be focused on more
rather than theoretical and classroom knowledge.
 Some people also suggested that open book examinations should
be conducted.
 The subjects taught should be more application based.
Conclusion
On the basis of findings, the following conclusions were drawn. It was found that:
1. The respondents viewed that at university level most of the course structure, knowledge provided and exam
patterns need to be innovated.
2. Change in pattern of question papers, i.e., making it more objective, will improve students’ learnings and
discourage rote learning.
3. Lack of practical knowledge affect their learnings.
4. The course and the examination structure should evolve with time.
5. More and more practical and corporate exposure will help aide the students’ learning.
6. The subjects taught should be more relevant. The specialization subjects should be focused upon properly.
7. We can conclude from this research that the course and the exam structure or pattern has an impact on the
students’ learning abilities.
