BIODIESEL PRODUCTION FROM

PROSODIES JULIFLORA Oil

ABSTRACT
• The country of Haiti has the capability to use biodiesel for
their transportation needs. This would increase their fuel
security, economy and environmental impact. prosodies
juliflora is a plant that will grow well in Haiti and produce a
high yield of biodiesel. This report outlines studies done to
find the optimal method for converting J.prosodies juliflora
oil to usable biodiesel. The amount of alkaline catalyst and
ratio of methanol to fresh oil for the greatest conversion of
fatty acid methyl esters are reported. In addition, the
optimal reaction was established. Finding the most efficient
way to convert J.prosodies juliflora oil to biodiesel would
allow for this biodiesel to be produced as economically as
possible.
INTRODUCTION
Haiti is a small island country, approximately 27,560
square kilometers (Central Intelligence Agency, 2009). This
third world county has eighty percent of its population
under the poverty line and sixty six percent of population is
employed by agriculture business (Central Intelligence
Agency, 2009). The socio-economic profile of the country
has the potential to be supported and improved by
introducing a fuel source that is grown locally. Currently,
the majority of the fuel source for transportation in Haiti is
based on petroleum diesel and is imported from other
countries (Rothkopt, depicts the amount of fuel used, in
thousand barrels per day, in Haiti between 1980 and 2006
(Energy Information Administration, 2008)..
The graph shows the overall increased consumption of
petroleum and its likely continued increasing trend. Plants
grown for a biomass fuel source, such as biodiesel, have the
possibility of increasing the amount and quality of the
workforce, while providing independence to the
country’s energy needs (Rothkopt, 2008). The United Natio
ns has started biodiesel programs with Haiti, because they
believe biodiesel will be a strong developmental tool for
the country (Rothkopt, 2008). This program includes
cooperation with Brazil and cultivation of the J. curcas
plant. Brazil is a strong leader in biodiesel development for
developing countries

Prosodies juliflora
Prosopis juliflora (Spanish: bayahonda blanca) is a shrub or small
tree in the Fabaceae family, a kind of mesquite. It is native
to Mexico, South America and the Caribbean. It has become
established as an invasive weed in Africa, Asia,Australia and
elsewhere.[1] Prosopis juliflora has a wide range of vernacular
names, although no widely usedEnglish one except for "mesquite",
which is used for several species of Prosopis. It is called bayahonda
blanca in Spanish and bayarone Français in French. Other similar
names are also used,
including bayahonde, bayahonda and bayarone but these may also
refer to any other Neotropical member of the genus Prosopis. The
tree is known by a range of other names in various parts of the
world,
includingalgarrobe, cambrón, cashaw, épinard, mesquite, mostrenc
o, or mathenge.[10] Many of the less-specific names are because
over large parts of its range, it is the most familiar and common
species of Prosopis, and thus to locals simply
"the"bayahonde, algarrobe, etc. "Velvet mesquite" is sometimes
given as an English name, but properly refers to a different
species, Prosopis velutina.[2]

LYE
• A lye is a liquid obtained by leaching ashes (containing
largely potassium carbonateor "potash"), or a
strong alkali which is highly soluble in
water producing causticbasic solutions. "Lye" is commonly
the alternative name of sodium hydroxide(NaOH) or
historically potassium hydroxide (KOH).
• Today, sodium hydroxide is commercially manufactured
using a membrane cellchloralkali process. It is one of the
highest volume industrial chemicals with world-wide
annual production of 45 million tons in 1998.[citation needed] It
is supplied in various forms such as flakes, pellets,
microbeads, coarse powder or a solution.
METHANOL
• Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol, wood
alcohol, wood naphtha, methyl hydrate, or wood spirits, is
a chemical with the formula CH3OH(often abbreviated MeOH).
Methanol acquired the name "wood alcohol" because it was once
produced chiefly as a byproduct of the destructive distillation of
wood. Modern-day methanol production occurs in a catalytic
industrial process directly from carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide,
andhydrogen.
• Methanol is the simplest alcohol, and is a light, volatile,
colorless, flammableliquid with a distinctive odor very similar to
that of ethanol (drinking alcohol).[10]However, unlike ethanol,
methanol is highly toxic and unfit for consumption. At room
temperature, it is a polar liquid, and is used as
an antifreeze, solvent, fuel, and as a denaturant for ethanol. It is also
used for producing biodiesel viatransesterification reaction.
