SPEAKING SKILL AT SMA FRATER PALOPO

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
English as one of the international languages is very important since it
requires as a bridge of communication. Language is a system for
communication, for that reason it is evidence that communication skills are a
big part of learning a language. In learning a language, there are four kinds of
skill in learning a language, they are writing, listening, reading, and speaking.
Those components cannot be separated because they are important and
related one another. For example, to study English or mastery of English, we
can know speak English, writing, reading and listening. They cannot be
separated one another. Practice speaking is therefore a central part of English
lessons, because speaking is an important skill, it is as bridge that connects
people talking the same language. Speaking helps people to express their
thought, idea, feeling and emotion to other. However, to make students speak
the target language is not always easy, there are some problem that face by
students when they speak in foreign language, and there can be several
different reasons why this is the case. Confidence is a very important element
in learning to speak a language. Many learners worry that they are going to
make a mistake or that people listening will not understand them.
1.2 Problem Statements

What are the students’ problems in developing


speaking skill at SMA Frater Palopo?”

1.3 Objective of the Research

The objective of this research is to know what the real


problems those students faced in developing their speaking skill at
SMA Frater Palopo.

The researcher focuses on students’ problems


in develo ping speaking skill at SMA Frater Palopo.
CHAPTER II

2.1 Some Pertinent Ideas


1. Definition of speaking
Harmer (2007:60) explained that speaking is a skill which
becomes important part of daily life, and such needs to be
developed and practiced independently in the grammar curriculum.
In addition speaking is the process of building and sharing meaning
through the use of verbal non-verbal symbols, in a variety of
context, by speaking with others.
2. Another Possible Problems in speaking
 Inhibition
 Nothing to say
 Low or uneven participation
 Mother-tongue used
3. Speaking Skill
According to Nunan (2003:48) Language skills are divided
into two; receptive and productive skills which are intended to be
achieved by students. Nunan says, “Language generated by the
students (in speech or writing) was referred to productive. Language
directed at the students (in reading or listening) was called
receptive.”

RESEARCH METHOD

3.1 Research Design

This researcher will use qualitative descriptive


research

3.2 Time and Location of the Research

The researcher will conduct her research in November, 20017 at


SMA Frater Palopo especially in tenth grade.
3.3 Population and Sample of the
Research

1.Population
The population of the research will be the tenth grade
students, of the research of SMA Frater Palopo in academic
2016/2017.
2.sample
This research used porposive sampling in choosing the
sample. The researcher will choose 7 students’ as sample of this
research, researcher choose a sample based on students'
understanding, so the researcher chose a good student in English
but still problematic in speak.
3.4 Instrument of the Research

The researcher will use interview as the instrument. It is used


to interview the students about their problem in speaking English.
Then, the kind of interview that will be used in this research is open
interview. The audio/video recording will be used as supporting
instrument to help the researcher in gathering the data more detail and
documentation.

3.5 Procedure of Collecting Data

1. Researchers will come to school


2. Researcher will ask the English teacher which are the students that
good in learning English but have problem to speak in English
3. Researcher will choose students who fit the criteria
4. The researcher will interview the student based on the instrument
