 In Philippines, rainy season dominants almost the

half of the year. Road maintenance and reconstructions

were performed substantially due to some construction
practice often leads to erosion of the surface layer of
the pavements, especially where the quality of the soil
used is poor.
 Some of the error in construction of local roads is
the easy breaking pavements, due to the insufficient
consideration of using a subgrade stabilized treatment
or support layer such as an aggregate sub base.
 To strengthen the durability of the concrete pavements in local
roads and increase the life span of the pavement at the same time to
improve the sustainability of preservation and maintenance
treatments for concrete-surface limiting the used of new material.

 To provide a quality services to public transportation by quantifying

the effects of various properties of aggregates base on the
performance of concrete pavement foundation.

 To create a sustainable approach to construction by using slag

cement will lead to a stronger, more durable, and denser.

 To know if the constructed roads followed the proper process of

pavement construction.
 This research proposes a strategy to improve the methods and
process of implementing pavements in local roads.

Figure 1. Several factors that affects pavement foundation.

• Poor support
• Poor Drainage

• Loss of support (Due to Erosion)

• Differential settlement of foundation layers
Figure 2. Treatment of problematic areas.

1. Over excavate and placement of select fill or low

volume change
material.

2. Chemical stabilization
(cement, class c fly ash, lime)
Table 1. Foundation treatment options need to consider for cost effective treatment
once the proper soil investigation has been completed.

1. Drying out the subgrade This process can delay construction

and not typically successful in rainy
weather. Removal of excessive
moisture in wet soil can be completed
by providing drainage through
trenches, toe drains or a combination
of a drainage support layer sub drain.

1. Blend the soil This method can be less expensive as

compared to other methods, there have
been mixed results with subgrade
performance. Proper compaction and
consolidation can prevent settlement
and differential deflections with non
uniform soils.

1. Remove unstable soils and replace It can be completed of acceptable

with select fill materials are available. Although this
method is very successful, the
availability of quality fill can lead to
higher cost.
Table 2. Benefits of Aggregates Subbase and a drainage system.

1. Increase performances and service life

1. Maintains uniform support

1. Provides drainage from water infiltration

1. Helps reduce shrink and swell of high volume-change soils

1. Prevents consolidation of subgrade
